BURLINGTON, VT -- Jeremy Martinez went 3-for-5 with two runs and a three-run inside-the-park home run to lead the State College Spikes to an 11-2 victory over the Vermont Lake Monsters Sunday evening at historic Centennial Field.
Vermont had cut a State College three-run lead to 3-2 with a pair of runs in the bottom of the fourth inning on a Luke Persico RBI double that also scored a run on a fielding error by rightfielder Ricardo Bautista. But with one out in the top of the fifth, Lake Monsters starter Xavier Altamirano walked Vince Jackson and gave up a single to Ryan McCarvel before Martinez popped a flyball down that line that rightfielder Jhonny Rodriguez could not catch. The ball rolled toward the outfield fence and before Rodriguez could retrieve the ball, Martinez was able to round the bases for the fifth inside-the-park homer in Spikes history.
The Spikes added two more runs in the inning on a Bautista RBI tripe and Yariel Gonzalez RBI single off reliever Matt Milburn, who was making his Vermont debut after being promoted from the Arizona League Athletics. State College added three more runs in the seventh off Milburn on a Bautista RBI single and Gonzalez two-run double for the 11-2 advantage.
Spikes starter Jordan Hicks (2-0) allowed two runs (one earned) on five hits over 5 1/3 innings for the win, while Jhonathan Escudero (2 1/3 innings) and Greg Tomchick (1 1/3 innings) combined to toss 3 2/3 hitless innings of relief. Gonzalez was 3-for-5 with three RBI, while McCarvel 2-for-4 with a run, a double and two RBI for State College (34-15).
Tyler Ramirez was 2-for-2 with two walks and a run scored to extend his hitting streak to nine games, while Nate Mondou was 1-for-4 with a walk to extend his team record and NYPL season high consecutive on base streak to 29 straight games. Altamirano (2-2) was charged with six runs (five earned) on eight hits over 4 2/3 innings to take the loss for Vermont (19-30), which has lost seven straight and 13 of its last 15 games since having a 17-17 record on July 22nd.
The Lake Monsters will look to salvage one of the three games in the series with the Spikes on Monday night starting at 7:05 pm. The Boston Red Sox Mobile Showcase will be at the ballpark featuring fun and inactive games.
