Great Lakes Loons News Release
Tim Smith of the Clinton LumberKings hit a solo home run down the right field line in the top half of the 10th inning to snap a 4-all tie and send the Western Division to a 5-4 victory in the 2008 Midwest League All-Star Game, powered by Dow Corning.
The game was played before a sellout crowd of 5,814, a new Dow Diamond record.
The blast came off Miguel Ramirez of the host Great Lakes Loons, who was tagged with the loss. After the game, Smith was presented with the game's Star of Stars MVP award.
The win snapped a three-game losing streak for the Western squad, dating back to the West's 6-3 win in 2004 in Cedar Rapids.
Peoria right-hander Blake Parker hurled 1 2/3 relief innings, recording four of his five outs by strikeouts, en route to the victory. The game was played in 3 hours, 29 minutes plus a 30 minute rain delay at the conclusion of the fifth inning.
The West jumped out to a 2-0 lead with two first inning runs off starter Steven Johnson of the Loons. Both runs were driven home on a single by Corey Brown of Kane County.
The East then took the lead with three runs in the third inning. The West later tied the game at three in the fourth inning on a ground out. They took the lead at 4-3 on an Edilio Colina RBI single scoring Jovan Rosa.
With a brisk rain falling in the bottom of the fifth inning, Charlie Kingery of Quad Cities tripled and scored on a wild pitch to tie the game at four.
Kingery finished the game with two hits, including the triple, a run and an RBI. Rosa had a pair of hits including a double and two runs scored.
