La Crosse Spartans News Release
La Crosse, WI: When the West Michigan Thunderhawks face the La Crosse Spartans this Friday at the La Crosse Center, they will have to face one of their old teammates just days after his release. La Crosse this week signed three talented players to help their staggering offense, a group that includes Quarterback Buddy Rivera. Rivera was recently let go by the Thunderhawks and quickly snatched up by the Spartans. The dual-threat signal caller has appeared in one game thus far, completing 10 of 16 passes for 71 yards and two touchdowns versus zero interceptions.
"Rivera instantly makes us a better team," stated Spartans Co-Owner and General Manager Chris Kokalis. "He is a proven indoor football Quarterback, and we value his ability to hurt teams with both his arm and his legs. The other moves made this week will greatly improve our offense as well, and we will continue to evaluate talent to make this team as good as we know it can be"
The team also signed Wide Receivers Aaron Straiten and Lawrence Hellams to add size and speed to the outside. Straiten, a 6 ft. 2 inch speedster from UNLV compiled 534 yards in 20 games for the Rebels to go along with three touchdowns. He will be counted on to give Rivera a dominating presence in the slot. Hellams played at both Howard University and Upper Iowa, and recentley had a tryout with the Washington Redskins. He will bring along his 4.47, 40 yard dash speed to an offense that needs another proven deep threat.
The three new additions will be in uniform for the Spartans this Friday evening when the Atlantic East Division's second place team comes to town. Game time is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. at the La Crosse Center. Tickets for the game are still available, but are running out fast!
