Phoenix Mercury News Release
PHOENIX - The three-time WNBA Champion Phoenix Mercury will aim for a league-record tying fourth WNBA Championship this postseason after the team tonight clinched its franchise-record ninth consecutive playoff appearance (2013-2021), 12th in the last 13 seasons, and 16th in franchise history overall.
The Mercury sealed its berth tonight with losses by both Los Angeles and New York tonight prior to the team's game with Chicago. Already the winningest coach in franchise postseason history, Mercury Head Coach Sandy Brondello has now reached the playoffs in all eight season at the helm of the Mercury, one of only two current heads coaches to reach the WNBA Playoffs in every season since 2014 with the same team (Cheryl Reeve - Minnesota).
The Mercury currently sits in fifth place, just 1.0 game out of fourth place, and only 1.5 games out of the third seed. If Phoenix were to climb as high as the 1st or 2nd seed, the Mercury will earn a Round 1 and Round 2 double-bye before hosting Game 1 of the WNBA Semifinals at Footprint Center on Tuesday, September 28.
If Phoenix finishes as the 3rd or 4th seed, the Mercury will earn a Round 1 bye and host a Round 2 single-elimination game at Footprint Center on Sunday, September 26.
If Phoenix finishes as the 5th or 6th seed, the Mercury will host a Round 1 single-elimination game on Thursday, September 23, with the venue still to be determined.
If Phoenix finishes 7th or 8th, the team will play on the road in Round 1 on Thursday, September 23.
Game time and opponent are still to be determined.
Tickets will go on sale when playoff dates and rounds have officially been determined.
