Mississippi Braves News Release
PEARL, MS - The Mississippi Braves (4-2, 37-38) picked up their third-straight win in the series opener against the Jackson Generals (2-4, 41-35) on Wednesday morning at Trustmark Park, 7-1. Joey Wentz (W, 4-6) tossed 6.0 shutout innings and struck out a career-high eight batters en route to his second-straight win on the mound.
Wednesday's matinee served as the series opener after Tuesday night's game was postponed by rain. After three scoreless innings, the Braves bats handed Wentz a lead. Drew Waters singled to begin the frame, extending his league-leading on-base streak to 30 games and hitting streak to 18 games. Riley Unroe moved Waters to third with a double and Ryan Casteel singled home Waters to put the M-Braves up 1-0. Jackson starter Matt Peacock (L, 3-3) walked Greyson Jenista to load the bases. Alejandro Salazar became the fifth-straight M-Brave to reach safely in the fourth inning when he singled home Unroe and Casteel to make it 3-0.
Cristian Pache led off the fifth inning with a double against Peacock, and the Braves were immediately threatening again. Unroe singled home Pache with his second hit of the game to stretch the lead to 4-0. Casteel drew a walk, reaching base for the third consecutive plate appearance and Jenista brought home two more to make it 6-0 with a triple to deep left.
In the sixth inning, the M-Braves scored for the third-straight frame when reliever Matt Brill walked Unroe with the bases loaded, and it was 7-0.
The M-Braves pounded out ten hits in the series opener, getting multi-hit efforts from Unroe, Casteel, and Salazar. Casteel was 2-for-3 and scored twice, and is 10-for-23 over his last six games. Unroe was also 2-for-3 with two runs and is 10-for-23 over his last six.
Jason Hursh gave up a pair of hits in the seventh inning and Jackson avoided the shutout when Jeffrey Baez scored on a wild pitch. Jordan Harrison pitched 2.0 perfect innings, striking out two, behind Hursh to finish off the 7-1 victory.
Wentz collected his fifth quality start, earning his second-straight win on the mound with 6.0 innings of three-hit baseball. The last two M-Braves starters, Wentz and Monday's opener Tucker Davidson, have shutout the opposition on just eight hits.
The win moves the M-Braves to 5-1 against the Diamondbacks affiliate this season.
The M-Braves and Generals will play a doubleheader on Thursday night at Trustmark Park. RHP Jasseel De La Cruz (1-2, 3.16) will make the start in game one for the M-Braves against Jackson LHP Bryan Valdez (3-2, 3.89). The nightcap features a to be determined starter for the Braves against RHP Joel Payamps (1-3, 5.03) for the Generals.
