Daytona Tortugas News Release
JUPITER, FL - The Tortugas tossed a one-hitter in a matchup of first place teams, to blank the Jupiter Hammerheads, 3-0, Tuesday night at Roger Dean Stadium. Wennington Romero worked the first seven innings, before Aaron Fossas closed out the first nine-inning shutout for Daytona this season.
All of the game's offense came in Daytona's sixth inning, when the Tortugas put a three spot on the board. LHP Daniel Castano, working on a three-hit shutout, ran out of gas in the sixth frame. Dilson Herrera began the rally with an infield single, before Castano walked the bases loaded. Taylor Trammell then broke the scoreless tie by bounding a two-run basehit into right field. Daniel Sweet would add on two batters later, with a basehit into right field of his own.
That was plenty of offense for the Tortugas pitching staff on Tuesday. Romero allowed a first inning single to Joe Dunand, before keeping the Hammerheads hitless over his final 21 batters faced. The only baserunners the Hammerheads had, other than the single, were on the three errors committed by the Tortugas. Mitch Nay had a throwing and fielding error at third base, separated by three innings, and Ibandel Isabel had a fielding error at first.
RHP Aaron Fossas recorded the final six outs, the only baserunner coming on the second Nay error, for his first save of the year. The Tortugas allowed four runners, while fanning six in the shut out.
Romero (3-0) struck out five in his seven shutout innings of one-hit ball. Castano (4-1) suffered his first loss, after winning each of his first four starts. He allowed three runs on six hits over six-plus innings.
The series continues Wednesday with LHP Ty Boyles (0-2, 17.61) getting the ball for Daytona against RHP Sean Guenther (0-0, 6.48). First pitch is scheduled for 6:30 PM, with coverage beginning at 6:20 PM with The Metcare Pregame Show on AM 1230, AM 1490, and FM 106.9 WSBB.
NOTES: Dilson Herrera has hit safely in 14 straight starts... TJ Friedl has hit safely in a season-best eight straight games... Taylor Trammell has reached base in 10 straight games... Daytona has scored first in eight of their last 10 games... Daytona currently has the second most wins (17) in Minor League Baseball... Daytona is now 12-0 when leading after eight innings and 11-1 when their starter gives them 6+ innings.
