Clearwater Threshers News Release
CLEARWATER, Fla. - Austin Listi launched his third home run of the season, and Clearwater pounded out 11 hits on Tuesday night, but the Threshers fell just short in a 5-4 loss to the Lakeland Flying Tigers at Spectrum Field.
Down 5-3 in the ninth, the Threshers (9-16) connected for three consecutive two-out singles, the latter a knock to right from Adam Haseley that scored Jose Gomez to cut the deficit to one. Arquimedes Gamboa had taken a big turn around third base, and the Flying Tigers alertly threw to third to catch Gamboa off the bag and end the ballgame.
Threshers starter Connor Seabold (0-2) struck out three in the first on Tuesday, but Lakeland (12-13) grabbed the early lead after a walk, hit batter, and a two-out, two-run single from Daniel Pinero.
Clearwater quickly cut the deficit in half. Listi worked the count full with two outs, and launched a solo shot to left off Austin Sodders (1-2) for his third round-tripper of the season.
The Threshers knotted it up an inning later, after Mickey Moniak and Henri Lartigue opened the frame with back-to-back singles to put runners at the corners. With one down, Luke Williams hit a shallow fly to right-center, and Moniak tagged and scored just ahead of the throw from right fielder Jose Azocar to tie the game at two.
Seabold held Lakeland off the board through his next four innings, before an error allowed Blaise Salter to reach and opened the door for a two-run sixth.
Pinero followed with a liner off the wall in left for a double, and Austin Athmann's grounder to short scored Salter to give Lakeland the lead. A wild pitch would later permit Pinero to cross the plate, making it 4-2.
Alfred Gutierrez entered in relief for Lakeland in the bottom half, and with one out Darick Hall went the opposite way with a double to left to bring the tying run to the plate. After Moniak's grounder to second advanced Hall over to third, Lartigue shot an opposite-field single to left to score Hall and bring the Threshers to within one.
Salter's solo homer in the seventh would lift Lakeland to a 5-3 lead, and ultimately serve as the difference-maker.
Game two of the three-game set will take place at Spectrum Field on Wednesday with a noon first pitch. Adonis Medina (2-2) will take the hill opposed by Anthony Castro (2-1), and the game will be broadcast live on threshersbaseball.com starting at 11:45 a.m.
