PORT CHARLOTTE, Fla. - Jesus Sanchez drove in two runs Tuesday, but the St. Lucie Mets pitching staff silenced the Charlotte Stone Crabs 4-2 at Charlotte Sports Park.
The Stone Crabs (11-14) entered the series as the top offense in Minor League Baseball with a .306 batting average, but were held to just five hits by the St. Lucie pitching staff.
St. Lucie (11-13) starter Josh Prevost (2-1) turned in his first quality start of the season, allowing two runs on five hits over six innings. Stephen Nogosek and Matt Pobereyko combined to work three innings of hitless baseball. Pobereyko earned the save.
The Mets jumped in front right away Tuesday. Jacob Zanon led off the game with a single to right before Andres Gimenez walked. Both runners advanced on a double steal before a throwing error brought home Zanon to make it 1-0. After Ian Strom walked, he stole second, allowing Gimenez to come in and score on the throw to bring the count to 2-0.
In the bottom of the first, Josh Lowe tripled to the left field corner before Sanchez cranked a three-bagger to right to make the score 2-1.
The Mets added a run in the third before Brandon Brosher plated Michael Paez on a double in the fourth.
Trailing 4-1 in the bottom of the sixth, Stone Crabs shortstop Lucius Fox lined a double to right to start the inning. After a groundout moved him to third, Sanchez drove home Fox on a ground ball to first, capping the scoring at 4-2.
Charlotte starter Kenny Rosenberg (1-1) logged five innings, allowing four runs (two earned) on five hits while striking out three and walking three.
The Stone Crabs will look to even the series with St. Lucie at 6:35 p.m. on Wednesday. Mikey York (2-2, 5.59) makes the start for Charlotte against Gabriel Llanes (2-2, 4.74) of the Mets. Coverage starts at 6:20 p.m. on the Stone Crabs Baseball Network.
