
Wendle and Brenner Honored

EDENTON, - NC - The Edenton Steamers of the Coastal Plain League announce today that Joey Wendle has been awarded the 2011 Gieseke Gold Award for most outstanding Steamer and Ryan Brenner has been awarded the Goodman Glove Award for most outstanding defender in 2011.
Wendle, a junior at West Chester University (PA), led the Steamers in 13 statistical categories this season. He tied the franchise mark in batting average at .377 broke the Steamers and the Coastal Plain League record for hits in a season and led the CPL in hits with 81. Wendle was honored as the Rawlings CPL hitter of the week for week four of action this season and had a 21 game hitting streak from July 1st to July 28th.
Brenner, a junior from Miami of Ohio, led the Steamers in stolen bases with 35, setting a new franchise record, and walks with 35. Brenner also was the leading outfielder this season for Edenton. He set a new franchise mark for put-outs in a season by an outfielder, recording 124 putouts primarily as a centerfielder.
The two awards were presented to both players in a pre-game ceremony at Historic Hicks Field prior to the last regular season home game. The surviving members of both Livy Goodman and Gayle Gieske were the honorary presenters of the award.
Gayle Gieseke was an integral part of the Steamer family for many years. She served as treasurer on the Steamers board of directors as well as being a host family for players throughout the years.
Livy Goodman served on the executive committee of the Edenton Steamers and was the annual organizer for the Clambake in Edenton. Goodman was able to bring such celebrities as Steve Garvey, Tommy John, and Bob Feller to the event to talk to the current Steamers and host families as well as being the unofficial scorer for all Steamers home games.
