Wenatchee Wild News Release
WENATCHEE, Wash. - The Wenatchee Wild jumped out to an early 2-0 lead Friday night at the Town Toyota Center and went on to defeat the Fresno Monsters, 4-2. The Wild improved its record to 7-3 with the win in its first ever meeting against the expansion Monsters.
Wild winger Eliot Grauer (Mukioteo, Wash.) scored the first goal of the game 98 seconds into the first period. Entering the offensive zone down the right wing, the right-hander found the top part of the net on a blistering shot from inside the near circle. Bradley Shumway (Lafayette, Colo.) and Shawn Pauly (Bellingham, Wash.) assisted. Defenseman Anthony Martinez (Schawmburg, Ill.) made it a 2-goal game at the 4:21 mark of the first frame on a wrist shot from the far point. D.J. Vandercook (Farmington Hills, Mich.) and Carl-Johan Sjogren (Sodertalje, Sweden) assisted.
Fresno cut Wenatchee's lead in half at the 7:36 mark of the first period when Willie Hess scored on a backhander. The Wild got that goal back with a little less than eight minutes remaining prior to the first intermission when Vandercook batted a rebound into the net for his second goal of the season. Kyle Huson (Parker, Colo.) and Zachary Wallace (Burbank, Calif.) assisted.
Ben Carey (Centennial, Colo.) extended the Wild's lead to 4-1 when he scored an even-strength wraparound goal with 8:03 remaining in the second period. Pauly and Grauer earned the assists. Wild netminder Brandon Jaeger (Champlin, Minn.) assured that the Wild maintained a 3-goal lead heading into the second intermission when he made a spectacular glove save on Hess, who broke free on a breakaway with a minute remaining in the period.
The Monsters scored 72 seconds into the third period when Jordan Lovick knocked the puck into the Wild net off of a circle-to-circle pass from Walker Hyland. Fresno, however, would get no closer.
Jaeger made 30 saves on 32 shots for his fifth win of the season. Jake Williams and Peter Megariotis combined to make 35 saves on 39 shots. Neither team scored on the power play. The Monsters went 0-for-5 while the Wild went 0-for-6.
For the Wild, Vandercook and Grauer each scored a goal and an assist. Pauly recorded a pair of assists.
The Wild will try to sweep its 2-game series against the Monsters tomorrow night. Faceoff is slated for 7:05 p.m.
