Frederick Keys News Release
On a cold, rainy night, the Keys defeat the Myrtle Beach Pelicans, 9-4, on opening night at Harry Grove Stadium. Frederick, now 3-2 on the year, scored the first of their nine runs in the second inning after an interesting chain of events. With two outs, Billy Rowell reached base on a single to centerfield. Greg Miclat followed with a high pop fly in the infield. Pelicans' first baseman, Gerardo Avila, camped under the ball but dropped it and Miclat reached and kept the inning alive. 3B Bobby Stevens then got up and hit a routine fly ball to centerfield but Jahdiel Santamaria lost it in the lights and Rowell and Miclat both scored to give the Keys a two-run lead.
In the bottom of the third inning, Keys P Oliver Drake left the game with an apparent arm injury. With two outs in the inning, Drake walked Shanye Moody and following the pitch, Manager Orlando Gomez, Pitching Coach Blaine Beatty, and Athletic Trainer Patrick Wesley all raced to the mound. Drake would leave the game after 2 2/3 innings of work on the night. He allowed no runs, two hits, one walk, and struck out four.
With two outs in the bottom half of the third, Joe Mahoney laced a pitch down the right field line bringing home Xavier Avery. Mahoney wouldn't stay on base too long, as Ronnie Welty belted a Matt Grim pitch deep to right-centerfield for a two-run home run. In the fourth inning, more of the same ensued. With the bases loaded, Joe Mahoney drove home Brian Ward on a fielder's choice. With the Keys leading by six runs, Ronnie Welty decided to add some insurance runs. Welty drove another Grim pitch over the fence in right-centerfield, this time for a three-run home run.
The Keys bullpen had another strong outing, as the pitched 6 1/3 inning allowing four runs, two earned, while striking out 6. Raul Rivero and John Mariotti both did not allow a hit in their innings of work. Myrtle Beach and Frederick will take the field Wednesday night at 7 P.M. for game two of the three-game set at Harry Grove Stadium. Rich Zagone (0-1, 2.25 ERA) will take the hill for the Keys while Randall Delgado (0-0, 1.80) will pitch for the Pelicans.
