Lynchburg Hillcats News Release

Lynchburg's offensive woes continue as the Hillcats were only able to put up one run in a 2-1 loss to the Salem Red Sox.

The Hillcats had trouble offensively against Red Sox starter Stolmy Pimentel (1-0), managing just two hits against him in five innings. Lynchburg had runners in scoring position in the second inning after both Alex Buchholz and Neftali Soto singled back-to-back. But they couldn't mount a rally with only one out.

In the next half-inning, Oscar Tejeda led off with a double and later scored Salem's first run. Peter Hissey drove him in with a two-out single. The Red Sox scored one more in the fifth inning after Will Middlebrooks crossed the plate on Jon Hee's sacrifice fly.

The Hillcats scratched across one run in the sixth inning. Devin Mesoraco hit a bloop, two-out double to shallow centerfield to score Justin Reed from second base. It was Mesoraco's team-leading third RBI.

Other than that run, the Cats had no better luck against reliever Jeremy Kehrt. Carlos Mendez singled with one out in the ninth inning, but was stranded at first. The Cats have only managed three runs in the last 25 innings (three games, all losses).

Lance Janke (0-1) threw six innings and gave up two earned runs while striking out three in his first start in Lynchburg. However, he was given the loss. Andrew Bowman threw two innings of scoreless relief and struck out four, and Jeremy Horst threw one scoreless inning.

Pimentel picks up his first win of the season. Kehrt gets credit for the save after four innings in relief.

Lynchburg and Salem continue their 3-game series tomorrow morning at 11:05 at City Stadium. It's TUCP "Smoke Free, Say No to Drugs" Day. Lefty Matt Fairel (1-0, 0.00 ERA) faces Salem's righty Brock Huntzinger (0-0, 1.93 ERA).
