Modesto Nuts News Release
Colin Welmon dominated and Josh Fuentes had three hits but the Modesto Nuts fell 6-3 against the Rancho Cucamonga Quakes on Friday night at LoanMart Field.
Welmon (L, 1-5) allowed an unearned run in the first inning. In the second Ariel Sandoval bounced a RBI single over the drawn-in infield. That was the last baserunner Welmon allowed in his final start for the Nuts (31-36; 57-80) in 2016. The righty retired the final 17 he faced. He surrendered just three hits with no walks and four strikeouts.
Early on, the Nuts had a boat load of chances against Quakes (37-30; 79-58) starter Tim Shibuya (W, 4-0). The Nuts left a man at third in the first. They could not score with the bases loaded and one out in the second. In the third, the Nuts left runners at the corners. That was six runners left on base in the first three innings and ten total in the game.
Fuentes extended his hitting streak to ten games with two singles, a triple and two RBI while scoring the third run.
In the bottom of the eight, the Quakes opened up their lead against Christian Talley. Two errors helped grease the wheels for four runs, only one of which was earned. Devan Ahart cranked a two-run homer. A wild pitch scored a run and a throwing error to the plate surrendered a fourth tally.
Looking to snap a three-game losing streak, the Nuts have the second game of their four-game series against the Rancho Cucamonga Quakes on Saturday night at 7:05 p.m. Coverage on ModestoNuts.com will start at 7:00 p.m. Listen live online.
