Shreveport-Bossier Captains News Release
SIOUX CITY, Iowa - Sioux City Explorers lefthanded pitcher David Welch was excellent on Saturday night, allowing just five hits and no runs, with a lone walk and a season-high-tying 10 strikeouts, as he shut out the Shreveport-Bossier Captains 7-0 at Lewis and Clark Park.
Welch (7-5) struck out the first two hitters he faced, and the only baserunners he allowed in the first three innings were a bloop single by Andres Rodriguez in the second and a triple to right-center by Jovanny Rosario in the third. After a leadoff walk in the fourth, he picked Christopher Garcia off of first, and then Jorge Alvarez reached on a two-out error.
After that, Welch began a stretch of 11 straight hitters retired, before Mike Provencher tripled with one out in the eighth. But just as the lefty did after Rosario's triple, he kept Provencher at third base, before working around two singles in the ninth inning to complete the complete game.
Meanwhile, Welch was given plenty of offense - although it took a little time to make the lead comfortable. Captains starter Cardoza Tucker (3-4) walked the first two men he faced before Ray Serrano singled up the middle to give the Explorers (42-40, 17-17 2nd half) an early lead. Tucker held Sioux City at bay in the next three innings, but with one on and one out in the fifth, things unraveled. Serrano singled to knock in a run and make it 2-0, and Jacob Cruz homered on the next pitch to make it 4-0.
Tucker gave up one more in the sixth before being replaced by Justin Young, who allowed an inherited run to score before giving up one of his own in the seventh to complete the scoring.
Notes: The Captains failed to have one player with at least two hits for the first time in their 82 games this season...Cruz is 6-for-9 with four RBIs in the first two games of the series...This was the second time the Captains were shut out in four games, and the fourth time this season...Five of the first six Explorers runs came with two outs.
