
Weems, Cats take opener 8-4

In front of 4,058, Weems wiggled out of two early jams before the Cats took a 1-0 lead in the second inning when Jordan Foster's RBI groundout scored Carlos Adolfo.
But the Pelicans responded in the top of the fourth to take the lead. After Joe Espada's run-scoring single tied the game, Carlos Mendoza hit a bases-loaded double to right, scoring three and giving Pensacola a 4-1 advantage.
The Cats cut the lead to a run in th fifth inning. After back-to-back singles to start the inning, John Allen scored on a Jason Radwan RBI groundout and then Jordan Foster scored on a triple to center by David Keesee.
Fort Worth mounted a two-out rally in the sixth inning to take the lead. Foster's RBI single scored Adolfo to knot the game at four before the Cats took a 5-4 lead on a Jason Radwan broken-bat single to center.
The Cats tacked on two more runs in the seventh when Allen singled home two with the bases loaded for a 7-4 Fort Worth lead.
Foster, Radwan, Allen and Keesee all had two RBI in the game. Both teams notched 13 hits in the game.
Weems wound up allowing four runs on 13 hits, but did not walk a batter.
Byron Batson took the loss for Pensacola as he permitted five runs on eight hits in 5 2/3 innings.
Game 2 of the playoff series is Tuesday night at 7:05 p.m. Dan Grybash will pitch for the Cats with Santos Hernandez on the hill for the Pelicans.
