Red Bull New York News Release

BULLS FACE D.C. UNITED ON ESPN2: The New York Red Bulls start a three-game road swing when they take on D.C. United on Thursday at 7:30 PM ET at RFK Stadium (TV: ESPN2, ESPN Deportes; Radio: WADO 1280 AM).

New York just finished a four-game homestand with a 1-2-1 record after falling to the Colorado Rapids, 3-2, at Giants Stadium last Saturday night. The Red Bulls hit the road for seven of their next nine games looking to move up the Eastern Conference standings starting in the nation's capital. United had an eight-game unbeaten run snapped on Saturday when they lost to the New England Revolution, 2-1, at Gillette Stadium. Fred put United ahead in the 36th minute, however, a goal by Shalrie Joseph and a late penalty kick conversion from Steve Ralston gave the Revolution the full three points. D.C. is currently in a three-way tie with the Kansas City Wizards and Toronto FC for second place in the Eastern Conference on 16 points (3-2-7 overall).

The two teams have faced each other twice this season. On April 26 at Giants Stadium, D.C. earned a come-from-behind 3-2 win. D.C. went ahead in the 21st minute with a Rodney Wallace goal, but Juan Pablo Angel and Dane Richards put New York ahead in the second half. The Red Bulls looked like they were going to get the three until Emilio and Chris Pontius struck for the visitors in the 90th and 91st minutes to give D.C. their second win of the season. The two teams also squared off in Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup action on May 20 at RFK Stadium - a match United won, 5-3. D.C. went ahead, 4-1, after the first 45 minutes and held off a late Red Bulls comeback to win the match. Jorge Rojas scored two goals for the Red Bulls while Richards scored the other.

The Red Bulls are 17-28-6 all-time against United and went 1-1-1 against their Atlantic Cup foe in 2008. After D.C. took the opening game of the series at RFK Stadium, 4-1, on June 14, the Red Bulls responded with a 4-1 victory of their own at Giants Stadium on Aug. 10 - the largest margin of victory for a Red Bulls team ever against a D.C. squad. In the third match, the two teams played to a 0-0 tie at RFK Stadium on Aug. 30.

Jaime Moreno, who became the first player in MLS history to reach the 100-goal, 100-assist plateau, has enjoyed success against New York, scoring 23 goals and 18 assists in 38 games. Ben Olsen has tallied 11 goals and eight assists in 31 games versus New York. Angel has scored five goals in five matches against United.

NEW YORK TAKES ON REVS ON SUNDAY: The New York Red Bulls hope to pick up three vital points on the road when they take on Eastern Conference rival New England Revolution on Sunday night at 6:00 PM ET at Gillette Stadium (TV: MSG; Radio: WQBU 92.7 FM).

The Red Bulls travel to Foxborough to take on a Revolution side that is tied for fifth place in the Eastern Conference standings with a record of 3-3-4 (13 pts.). Last Saturday, the Revolution came from behind and snatched a victory late in the game against D.C. United, 2-1 at Gillette Stadium. United midfielder Fred gave the visitors the lead in the 36th minute, but New England midfielder Shalrie Joseph leveled the game in the 55th. Revolution striker Taylor Twellman made his season debut, coming on as a substitute in the 25th minute, and earned a penalty kick in second half stoppage time. Revolution captain Steve Ralston converted the late penalty as the hosts took all three points. Joseph leads the Revolution in goals with four and shares the team assist lead with Ralston with two apiece.

The Red Bulls hold a 16-23-10 record all-time against the Revolution. This is the second of three meetings between the teams, with the final match on Sept. 18th at Giants Stadium. The teams played to a 1-1 tie earlier this season on March 28 at Giants Stadium. Former Rev Khano Smith forced a Jay Heaps' own goal to give the Red Bulls the lead, but Kenny Mansally scored a late equalizer in the 90th minute.

RED BULLS HOST VIEWING PARTIES: The Red Bulls are hosting a pair of Official Viewing Parties for the team's two away games this week. On Thursday, for the Red Bulls' game against D.C. United at 7:30 PM, the Red Bulls Viewing Party will be at Madrid Lisbon Restaurant located at 325 Lafayette St. in Newark, NJ. Three days later, the Red Bulls Viewing Party for New York's clash against the New England Revolution at 6:00 PM will take place at Nevada Smiths located at 74 Third Ave. between 11th and 12th Sts. in New York City.

RAPIDS RUSH BY RED BULLS, 3-2: A pair of Conor Casey goals helped give the Colorado Rapids a 3-2 win over the New York Red Bulls at Giants Stadium on Saturday night. With the loss, the Red Bulls (2-7-3, 9 pts.) dropped their second-straight game and completed a four-game homestand, while the Rapids improved to 4-2-4 (16 pts.). Juan Pablo Angel and Danleigh Borman scored for New York.

New York had a great opportunity to go ahead less than a minute in. Defender Alfredo Pacheco received the ball on the left wing and hit a cross that bounced to Angel, whose ensuing shot was punched away by goalkeeper Matt Pickens. Less than 10 minutes later, Dane Richards got free in the penalty box and tried to find Angel with a low cross, but the Rapids were able to clear.

The Rapids took the lead in the 25th minute. Mehdi Ballouchy slid the ball to Colin Clark on the left wing, and he swung a cross to the back post that was headed in by Casey for his seventh goal of the season. Casey came close to putting the Rapids up, 2-0, in the 39th minute. Clark received the ball on the wing and curled in a ball to Casey that he nodded it over the crossbar.

New York equalized moments before halftime. Seth Stammler passed the ball to Angel and he flicked it to Richards. Richards turned past Cory Gibbs and was able to face goal before Gibbs took him down in the penalty box. Referee Ricardo Salazar pointed to the penalty spot and Angel stepped up to score his team-leading fourth goal of the season. It was the Red Bulls' first penalty kick goal of the year.

Casey gave the Rapids the lead again three minutes into the second half. After a battle for the ball deep in the Red Bulls' defensive end, Jordan Harvey was able to get free and cut it back to Omar Cummings, who floated it to Casey. The forward rose up and knocked it in past New York goalkeeper Jon Conway from close range.

The visitors extended their lead 12 minutes later. Cummings took the ball and made a run on the corner of the penalty box and was tripped up by Red Bulls midfielder Albert Celades. Salazar again pointed to the penalty spot and Ballouchy converted it to give Colorado a 3-1 advantage.

The Red Bulls pressed to get back in the game. In the 69th minute, Stammler freed himself from his man and headed a Borman corner kick over. Four minutes later, Borman was able to score his first goal of the season and put the Red Bulls within a goal. An Angel free kick was punched away by Pickens and Borman was able to get to the ball first and knock in the rebound.

In the third minute of stoppage time, the Red Bulls had a chance to tie the game when Luke Sassano hit a long ball that was knocked on by John Wolyniec to Macoumba Kandji, but his shot was blocked away.

RED BULLS, NYPD RECEIVE HONORS IN COLOMBIA: The NYPD soccer team and the New York Red Bulls are having great success in Colombia for their work developing "Soccer for Kids - Breaking Borders" program in which a delegation from both entities are currently in Colombia from May 20-27 to hold soccer clinics and bring underprivileged children from different schools 200 soccer balls and over 1,000 Red Bulls t-shirts and gear. That hard work has been recently recognized in a ceremony in which the group was awarded several high distinctions, including being given the Key to the City by the Mayor of Monizales, Juan Manuel Llano Uribe.

"We are very pleased that the Red Bulls and the New York Police Team are doing this work for the children of our city," Uribe said. "On behalf of our community, we would like to present them with the Key to the City and to assure them that our doors will always be open to them."

Also on hand to praise the group from New York was the Governor of the Department of Caldas, Pilar Lours, who officially appointed them the Guest of Honor of the Department of Caldas.

"We are honored to have our department chosen for these clinics and to receive the donations," Lours said. "The children who benefited from this effort you are making will remember these moments for a long time."

After the New York Police Deparment and Ernesto Motta from the New York Red Bulls were recognized, Motta was grateful in accepting the honors and continued to relay the message the purpose of their project.

"On behalf of Red Bull and the NYPD soccer team, we are touched by your gratitude. There was no need for the kind of attention we received from the Government and the City," Motta said. "Our only goal is to draw a smile on the children who visit and for us, it is with great satisfaction that we can do this."

The Police Department of Caldas also recognized the efforts of the members of the NYPD by giving the boys in blue the highest honor given to those who are not part of the local force. Colonel John Jaime Ospina Loaiza gave the "Shield of Honor" to NYPD Lieutenant Ronald Mejia.

"We are honored to receive this distinction and we were very impressed by the reception we received and the logistical support they gave us by putting a police bus at our disposal," said Mejia. "All this would not be possible without Dino Dominguez and Ernesto Motta on this project. The Red Bulls made this project a reality through the donation of t-shirts, balls, sports equipment, etc. Thanks to this great sports organization, we are here to share unforgettable moments with the children."

The NYPD team is not only enjoying giving back to the communities, but is playing against teams in the cities along the way. They have played two matches thus far, tying with the Police Manizales,1-1, and losing, 2-1, to Armenia. Their third and final match will be played in the city of Pereira.

The Secretary of Sports of the Municipality of Manizales, Carlos Arturo Buritica Atehortúa, joined in on showing support for the project by attending the clinic and donations made to San Jose, one of the poorest neighborhoods in Manizales.

"We are very fortunate that the delegation choose this neighborhood where the residents are truly grateful for these donations," Atehortúa said. "I want to thank you on behalf of the Secretary of Sports for this very nice gesture. Mr. Motta's words are clear: never lose hope and through sport and if you pursue a healthy lifestyle along with schooling, you will increase the potential to succeed in life."

RED BULLS-RAPIDS POST-GAME: Here was the reaction after the Red Bulls-Rapids match on May 31:

NEW YORK RED BULLS HEAD COACH JUAN CARLOS OSORIO

On the game: "I think there wasn't too (much) sophistication about the game, it was about getting wide, putting it into our box and compete for that aerial ball and obviously, we didn't defend it well couple times and we were harshly punished for it."

On Conor Casey: "He's just very good in the air and he beat us many times. Couple times, they ended up in goal. What can I say, we trained in practice, we know what they will do, and the execution was poor so defensively, we didn't defend that well and that was it.

"In my opinion we could have done better. We could have stopped the cross in the first part, we could have marked him better, we could have compete for him better, anticipate the cross and at the end we didn't do that and he punished us."

On the first goal: "Well we certainly have not break it down that way, where this is a specific area where you come out. All my instructions in this is you come out for that ball and in the process, if you hurt one of our defenders than be it. So, I think in general as I always say the players have to play their game and execute what we do in practice. So we didn't do defensively today.

On the points accumulated in the homestand: "I'm extremely disappointed. This is about results and about points and we certainly - with thirty percent of the points at stake so that's poor."

On the penalty call on the third goal: "I think at the moment we are getting punished for everything. Many times when you're having a good time, then things go your way. I think that they're not getting any of those. I watched the replay and I think that the contact is just minimum. I personally feel that was a tough decision to swallow."

NEW YORK RED BULLS FORWARD JUAN PABLO ANGEL

On his frustration with the team's struggles: "It's getting harder and harder. It's hard to explain it or justify it. I just think we just have to work harder than we are right now and try to turn things sooner rather than later because it's almost halfway through the season and we haven't been able to get this sorted out."

On the team only taking four points from the four game homestand: "Disappointing obviously, because we thought this one was very important for us in order to turn things around, and we haven't been able to do it. We played well for parts of the game, but it's still not good enough to earn a point, and we're required to be better in the table."

NEW YORK RED BULLS DEFENDER KEVIN GOLDTHWAITE

On the team's disappointing four game homestand: "Definitely, looking back on it, we're disappointed with the results. We're going to have to regroup and focus on the two games in the next week, so hopefully we can try and pick up some points there. But definitely disappointing coming out of this home stretch with four points, definitely disappointing."

On Conor Casey: "Credit to them, credit to Casey. Both goals he had were great balls served in. We could have handled them better, maybe stopped the cross before he even got in there, and just been able to battle with him better. Casey's a great player, great on crosses, I think we could have done better on him than we did tonight. It's surprising how strong he is. He's a big guy, and loves to fight, loves to compete. I don't think you see that. You see that with some of the guys in the league, you've got Brian Ching, Brian McBride. But I think Casey's one of those guys. Right now he's on top form definitely, scoring goals. He's a handful to deal with, definitely."

On Casey's first goal: "Alfredo (Pacheco) was giving me a shout to open my shoulders, but I think I reacted a little bit late, and could have done better with it."

NEW YORK RED BULLS MIDFIELDER ALBERT CELADES

On tonight's game: "This was another missed opportunity, I think we stepped onto the field with a winning mentality, but the early goal definitely affected us, especially the way it was scored; it was a play that we worked on all week long and the mistakes just keep on happening game after game. We scored before the half ended and that gave us some momentum, but then we got scored on right out of the gate in a very similar goal. It was very tough to overcome that goal; I then committed the penalty kick. After that we had some chances to tie the game, but the outcome of the game was negative anyway you look at it."

On his role tonight: "Tonight I played a bit more towards the left flank. It was coach's decision to play me in a different role tonight, it was more of a tactical move, but I personally think that didn't have a great influence on the game."

On losing eight points during the home stand, and the next games: "We are in a very difficult situation right now. We were hoping to obtain more than four points while we were home, but that wasn't the case. Now we have to go get those points away from home."

RED BULL ACADEMY UPDATE: JUNE 1

A LOOK BACK: U20s: On Saturday, May 30, the U20s got their season off to a good start, cruising to a 5-1 victory over visiting U20 Perugia. Two goals from Sam Petrone (Glen Rock, NJ), and one each from Steven Amaya (Queens, NY), Ryan Kinne (Naugatuck, CT), and Mario Rios (Morristown, NJ) were more than enough to get goalkeeper Sheldon Parkinson (Bronx, NY) the victory in goal.

"It was good to get the season off to a good start," said U20 head coach Rob Elliott. "Considering we have only trained once or twice, it was a good performance."

U18s: The U18 Red Bulls defeated the U18 Baltimore Bays by a score of 4-2 on Sunday, May 31 in US Developmental Academy League play.

After a scoreless first half, the game completely opened up in the second half with the Red Bulls getting on the score sheet first. In the 58th minute Mark Brode (East Setauket, NY) opened the scoring from a Cesar Blacido (Ramsey, NJ) corner kick. However, the lead was short lived as, two minutes later, the Baltimore Bays also converted from a corner kick to draw even. In the 64th minute, substitute Zachary Gomez (Flemington, NJ) finished from a Walter Hines (Brooklyn, NY) through ball. The goal of the game came in the 70th minute as Giorgi Chirgadze (Brooklyn, NY) curled in a left footed shot into the far corner from 25 yards out from a Gomez pass. Then in the 72nd minute, substitute Dragan Naumoski (Fair Lawn, NJ) finished neatly off a pass from Dylan Mencia (Honesdale, PA). Baltimore scored a late goal to make the final score 4-2 for the Red Bulls.

"We put together a really good second half," stated U18 coach Paul O'Donnell. "We scored four really good goals in a span of 14 minutes. A lot of the credit has to go to the substitutes who immediately impacted the game. Zachary Gomez came in and played really well for us. The win was crucial today as it keeps our slim play-off hopes alive."

U16s: On Sunday, May 31, the U16s clinched first place in the Mid-Atlantic Division of the US Development Academy League after earning a point with a 2-2 draw with U16 Baltimore Bays. After falling behind, 2-0, after the first ten minutes, the Red Bulls rallied and responded with a goal in each half to pull even. George Velasquez (Union City, NJ) scored his first goal of the season off an assist from Sam Adjei (Newark, NJ) to get the Red Bulls back in the game. After missing a penalty kick in the first half, the U16s converted their second penalty of the game as Victor Manosalvas (Clifton, NJ) slotted the ball in to tie the game. The U16s had several chances to win the game but were unable to convert.

"Today we clinched first placed in our division and completed the season undefeated at home," said U16 head coach Rob Elliot. "I am proud of our guys and they have earned everything they have achieved so far."

U15s: The U15 Red Bulls reversed an early season defeat with an impressive 2-0 away win over U15 Albertson SC in US Club Northeast Pre Academy League play on Sunday, May 31.

Travis Wantchekon (Brooklyn, NY) opened the scoring in the 30th minute off an excellent build up, resulting with a neat Fumio Himeno (Ft. Lee, NJ) through pass and a goal. Jixian Shen (Queens, NY) completed the scoring with a perfectly placed long ranged shot from 30 yards out in the 58th minute to seal the game. Matt Deziel (Wyckoff, NJ) saved a penalty kick in the 15th minute and Matt Stith (Montclair, NJ) made four saves in the second half to preserve the shutout.

"I thought the team played very well," said U15 head coach Stan Lembryk. "We played strong defense and created good scoring opportunities. This was a good result for us showing team's progress since the beginning of the season."

U14s: The U14 Red Bulls dropped a 2-0 decision to U14 Alberston on Sunday, May 31 in US Club Northeast Pre Academy League play. The Red Bulls had the better of the chances in the first half but failed to convert them. In the second half, Albertson scored against the run of play from outside the box. As the Red Bulls pushed for the equalizer in the late stages of the match, Albertson countered and scored the second goal to provide the final margin.
