Wednesday Was No Bueno for Railers in 4-1 Road Loss to Thunder

Glens Falls, NY - The Worcester Railers HC (2-2-0-0, 4pts) scored first but couldn't hold off the host Adirondack Thunder (4-2-0-0, 8pts) in a 4-1 loss in front of 1,864 fans at the Cool Insuring Arena on Wednesday evening. The Railers three game road trip continues Friday with a 7pm faceoff vs. the Monarchs in Manchester, NH.

Nick Bligh was the only goal scorer for Worcester while Mitch Gillam made 42 saves in net in the loss. Desmond Bergin scored twice for the Thunder, including the game winner midway through the second period as the Railers fell to 1-2-0-0 on the road this season.

Nick Bligh (1st) gave Worcester a 1-0 lead as he broke into the zone and sent a quick snap shot from 40 feet that beat netminder Colton Phinney on the blocker side at 6:17. Adirondack tied the score at 8:57 as James Henry sent a rocket from 30 feet on the rush down the leftwing side past Mitch Gillam. Both teams went 0-1 on the power play as the Thunder held a 12-11 edge on shots through first period.

Desmond Bergin (2nd) gave the Thunder a 2-1 advantage at 12:16 of the second period as he ripped a shot from the left slot through a screen for the only score on either side in the middle frame. Adirondack outshot Worcester 19-11 in the period as the Railers headed to the intermission down 2-1.

Adirondack would tack two more on in the third period as Mike Szmatula (2nd) deflected a shot through at 1:10 and Desmond Bergin (3rd) buried an empty netter at 18:17. Mike Cornell (1stFM) and Jakob Reichert (1stFM) dropped the mitts at 18:55 as Worcester was outshot 15-6 in the final frame in the 4-1 loss.

Colton Phinney (1-2-0-0) made 27 saves on 28 shots for Adirondack....Mitch Gillam (2-2-0-0) made 42 saves on 45 shots for Worcester with Evan Buitenhuis as the backup......Worcester went 0-for-1 on the power play while Adirondack went 0-for-2.... Tommy Kelley (inj), Yanick Turcotte (inj), David Quenneville (inj), Ivan Kosorenkov (immigration) and Connor Doherty did not dress for Worcester.... Jeff Kubiak is currently on recall with the Bridgeport Sound Tigers...Tommy Tsicos made his ECHL debut for the Railers while Bryan Arneson made his Railers debut....the Railers went 5-1-1-0 at the Cool Insuring Arena last season....Barry Almeida had seven shots on goal...Mike Cornell picked up a game high nine penalty minutes.

Game 2 of the three-game road trip will take place on Friday, Oct 26 with a 7pm faceoff at the Manchester Monarchs. The Railers wrap up the three-game trip back in Glens Falls, NY on Saturday with a 7pm battle vs. the Thunder.
