Windsor Spitfires News Release
(Windsor, ON) - General Manager Warren Rychel is pleased to announce Mike Weber has agreed to a three-year deal to return to the club as an assistant coach. Weber, 30, played in 201 regular season and 18 playoff games for the Spitfires between 2003 and 2007, serving as team captain during the 2006-2007 season.
Weber joined Head Coach Trevor Letowski and Associate Coach Jerrod Smith behind the bench on January 31st , 2018, after sustaining a career-ending knee injury while playing for Frolunda of the Swedish Elite League.
"I'm honoured and excited to be back behind the bench," Weber said. "I grew up and defined myself as a young player as a Windsor Spitfire, so to have the opportunity to help these young boys develop and flourish is close to my heart. My wife and our three sons are grateful to be here."
Rychel says Weber's hockey pedigree garnered instant respect among his players.
"Officially adding Mike to our staff will only help our young team get better," Rychel said. "His years of professional experience enhances what's already one of the league's strongest coaching staffs."
The Buffalo Sabres made Weber their second-round pick (#57 overall) in the 2006 NHL Entry Draft. He went on to play 341 regular season games with the Sabres and 10 more with the Washington Capitals.
