Stockton Ports News Release
STOCKTON, Calif- When you combine stellar pitching, solid defense and timely situational hitting, it's amazing how a small lead can stand so tall. On Friday night at Banner Island Ballpark, the Stockton Ports combined all these ingredients as they stood their ground in a 2-0 victory over the Rancho Cucamonga Quakes before a crowd of 4,498. The win is the Ports' second in a row, and assures them a series victory in their three game weekend set.
Pitching was stellar on both sides, as Ryan Webb (6-8) outdueled Steve Marek (1-1) in perhaps his most impressive outing of the season. Webb went seven shutout innings while allowing just four hits and striking out eight. He earned his first win since June 19th when he defeated the Bakersfield Blaze.
Marek was nearly equal to the task, going six full and allowing just one run on four hits while striking out five. The only run he allowed was on an RBI groundout from Danny Putnam, who was recently added to the Ports roster from AA-Midland. The one run was very well produced, as Eddie Cornejo led off the third with a double to left center and went to third on a beautiful sac-bunt from Gregorio Petit. With Cornejo at third, Putnam grounded out and brought in the only run the Ports would need on the night.
Stockton added an insurance run in the seventh on an RBI double from Luis Perez, which came off Quakes reliever Rafael Cruz.
The Ports bullpen held strong as they have all season, as Jeff Gray and Steven Sharpe (SV, 5) slammed the door on Rancho in the final two innings. Sharpe picked up his fifth save of the season after pitching a scoreless ninth.
With a 2-0 series lead, the Ports will try and pull out the broomsticks for a series sweep on Sunday evening at Banner Island Ballpark. Mike Madsen (5-8, 6.35 ERA) will take the mound for Stockton, opposed by Fransisco Rodriguez (3-11, 5.69 ERA). First pitch is set for 5:05 p.m.
