San Jose Giants News Release
SAN JOSE, CA - The San Jose Giants defeated the Bakersfield Blaze by a score of 9-5 Saturday evening at Municipal Stadium. The Giants improve to 26-17 in the first half, 67-46 overall. With this win, San Jose Giants Manager Lenn Sakata owns the second most wins in the San Jose franchise history with 678.
Tim Lincecum made the start for the Giants, tossing the first 2 2/3 innings before reaching his pitch limit. The right-hander allowed three runs, including a home run, but showed why the Giants made him their number one pick. Lincecum fanned five Blaze hitters while regularly reaching 99 miles per hour on the stadium radar gun.
Lincecum was relieved by Anthony Moreno (9-5) who pitched 2 1/3 innings and allowed one run. Justin Hedrick, Thomas King and Brian Anderson shut down the Blaze for the remaining four frames to complete the win. Blaze starter Edwin Vera received the loss to drop his season record to 0-6.
The Giants offense was on top of things for the second night in a row, hammering nine hits and picking up six walks on route to scoring nine runs. Chad Santos homered for the second time in as many days, and Sosa knocked a solo home run of his own in the contest. Mark Minicozzi also had a standout day, going 3-for-4 with three RBI against the Blaze.
The Giants look for the series sweep Sunday afternoon as the two teams go at it again at 1:00 p.m. The Giants send right-hander Darren Sack to the mound as he looks to improve to 7-0 on the season. He will be countered by Bakersfield's John Bannister, who is 5-8 with a 5.63 ERA on the season.
