Newark NY - A pitching duel between the Newark Pilots (14-22) and Adirondack Trail Blazers (15-22) ended early as the lighting and thunder wouldn t let up. After an hour delay the umpires called the game at a final of 2-2.
Newark scored first in the bottom of the second inning. Josh Ludwig (University of Rochester) reached base on an error by Adirondack Pitcher Alex Choleva (Utica). Scott Matthews (Washington) doubled to right scoring Ludwig from second and putting Newark up 1-0.
The Trail Blazers would tie it up in the fourth on a sacrifice fly from Dominic Fazio (High Point). Fazio would get a crucial second sacrifice fly RBI in the ninth to temporarily take the lead from Newark; 2-1.
With two outs, the Pilots responded with a run of their own. Ludwig doubled to left keeping the game alive for Matthews and the Pilots. Matthews got his third hit of the night singling to right field allowing Ludwig to tie the game and force it into extra innings.
Pilots pitcher Jimmy Wagner (Ithaca) had two down in the top of the tenth before players were removed from the the field.
Adirondack starter Alex Choleva (Utica) pitched a strong eight innings allowing six hits and one run. His reliever Anthony Beasley (Louisburg) is responsible for Newark s tying run in the ninth.
Drew Hasler (Valparaiso) started for the Pilots and had a great night of his own also pitching eight full innings allowing one run on only two hits and five strikeouts.
Both teams had one player with two RBI. Fazio from the Trail Blazers went hitless on the night but brought in the only two runs while Matthews went 3-for-4 with two RBI, allowing Ludwig to score twice.
The Pilots go on a three game road trip before coming home to host the PGCBL All-Star game at Colburn Park, Wednesday July 24th. Seven of the Newark Pilots will be playing and representing the Western Division Wednesday night. The Trail Blazers travel back to Robert S. Smith Sports Complex to play the Elmira Pioneers on Saturday.
