San Angelo Colts News Release
SAN ANGELO, Texas - In his first professional start last Friday against Harlingen, right-hander Chris Weast fell one out short of qualifying for a win, going four and two-thirds innings in a San Angelo victory over Harlingen. Wednesday night, Weast made sure to get through the required five frames, even going two more, as he picked up his first professional win, beating the Edinburg Coyotes 8-3 in front of 1,303 at Foster Field.
Edinburg (31-37) scored first off Weast (1-0), getting back-to-back doubles from Angelo Fermin and Alex Entrekin to start the game. But Entrekin was then thrown out going to third on a grounder to deep short, and Daryl Jones was caught stealing second to erase the baserunners. Weast was the beneficiary of another baserunning error in the second, as Amado German was thrown out by plenty at home plate on a double by Brandon McConnell to end the inning.
The Colts (42-25), who have now matched a season high with a six-game winning streak, tied the game on a home run by Andres Rodriguez on the first pitch of the bottom of the second off John Maschino (3-5). The Coyotes then retook the lead, scoring single runs in the third and fourth off Weast, but got nothing else the rest of the night.
San Angelo started to grind in the fifth, scoring six times on just two hits. Jack Chapman and Charley Belew led off with walks against Maschino. After John Anderson and Tyrone Pendergrass failed to advance the runners, Jose Torres walked. Then, Aaron Cone lined one that just nicked off the outstretched glove of first baseman Daryl Jones, trickling down the right field line to allow two runners to score, tying the game at 3-3. Then Rodriguez smashed his second no-doubt shot, a three-run homer to left, chasing Maschino and giving the Colts their first lead of the game, 6-3.
Isaac Daniels came in and promptly walked Wyn Diggs, Bryan Frichter, Chapman, and Belew again to force in a run and give San Angelo a 7-3 cushion. That was the end of the quick night for Daniels, as the Colts got one more in the sixth of Bryan Heaston, who went the final 3 1/3 for Edinburg. Overall, the Colts were issued 12 walks by the three Coyotes pitchers, tying a season high.
Once he was given the lead, Weast cruised. After getting a 1-2-3 fifth inning before San Angelo got on top, the rookie faced the minimum until the eighth, when he was lifted after giving up a leadoff single. Weast walked just one, allowing 10 hits and three runs, two earned, while striking out three and pitching into the eighth. He also got two double plays to end innings from Robert Matlock.
Miliade Venas relieved Weast and got a 6-4-3 double play from Entrekin and a flyout from Jones. He then worked around two hits in the ninth, striking out the side without allowing a run.
Notes: Diggs extended his now 37-game on-base streak, which leads the United League, with his fifth-inning walk...Aaron Cone extended his on-base streak to 24...Rodriguez had his second four-hit game of the homestand, his first multi-home run game of the year, and was a triple short of the cycle for the third time in five days...Venas had not thrown two scoreless innings in any appearance this year. It was also one out more than his previous longest outing with the Colts.
The Colts continue their four-game series with the Edinburg Coyotes on Thursday with a doubleheader starting at 6:05 p.m. CT. Both games will be seven innings on Thirsty Thursday, sponsored by Miller Lite and Foster Communications.
