Worcester Tornadoes News Release

Brockton, MA - Worcester starter Matt Weagle tossed his second complete game and Omar Pena hit a ninth inning sacrifice fly, as the Tornadoes inched past Brockton, 4-3, at Campanelli Stadium on Sunday night.

The Tornadoes and the Rox combined for just four hits and no runs through four complete innings. Worcester broke through on the scoreboard in the fifth on a clutch 2-out RBI single by Jeff LaHair, one of his three hits on the night. Brockton quickly answered back in the bottom of the inning on a sacrifice fly by Jason Colson. The score did not remain tied for long, as in the top of the sixth, Alex Trezza pushed the Tornadoes back ahead with his seventh home run of the season, a two-run shot that plated Chris Colabello ahead of him.

Worcester remained ahead until the bottom of the seventh, when after a walk, the Rox tied it back up with a 2-run homer by Colson, his second home run in as many days. But Omar Pena put the Tornadoes back in the lead with a sacrifice fly in the ninth scoring Chuck Jeroloman, who had just tripled. Jeroloman was able to jar the ball loose from catcher Lee Rubin's grasp as they collided up the third base line. Rubin had a chance to bring the Rox back in the bottom of the inning, but he grounded out to first with the bases loaded to end the ball game.

Both starting pitchers, Matt Weagle for Worcester and Stevie Delabar for Brockton, were terrific. The righty Weagle (7-2) went all nine, giving up three runs (two earned) on seven hits while striking out seven and walking two. Brockton's Delabar was solid through seven innings as well, allowing three runs on nine hits with four strikeouts and no walks. Jerry Dunn (1-1) received the loss for the Rox as he allowed Jeroloman's triple and Pena's sacrifice fly in the ninth. Worcester will look to take three of four from the Rox when the teams meet again on Monday night in the series finale. Righty Alex Pena will take the hill for the Tornadoes against Brockton's righty ace John Kelly. First pitch is scheduled for 6:05 p.m.

The Tornadoes return home on Thursday, July 10 to conclude the first half with a three-game series against the Nashua Pride. Thursday, June 10 will be a doubleheader starting at 6:05pm. Friday, July 11 will be the Tornadoes' third postgame fireworks show of the year. The series and first half concludes on Saturday, July 12, which will be "Going Green Night," sponsored by Waste Management and Sony.
