WBS Penguins Sign Nailer to Two-Way Contract

The Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins have signed, 2006-07 Wheeling Nailer left wing, Ned Havern to an AHL two-way contract, it was announced today by WBS Assistant General Manager Chuck Fletcher.

The 24-year-old appeared in 37 games with the Wheeling Nailers (ECHL) last season, recording 40 points (19+21) and 16 penalty minutes. He ranked fourth on the team in goals and fifth in total points, despite appearing in fewer than half of the team's contest.

The 6-1, 200 pound native of Arlington, Massachusetts also appeared in seven games with the Providence Bruins (AHL), going scoreless.

Originally selected by the Dallas Stars in the ninth round (273rd overall) of the 2002 NHL Entry Draft, Havern split the 2005-06 season between the ECHL and AHL. He recorded 48 points (23+23) and 40 penalty minutes in 70 combined ECHL games with Trenton and Stockton, and added one assist and four penalty minutes in five AHL games with Syracuse and Lowell.

Havern spent four seasons at Boston College (Hockey East), recording 57 points (28+29) in 151 games.

The Nailers, AA affiliate of the Pittsburgh Penguins and Philadelphia Flyers, will open the ECHL 20th Anniversary season with a game against the Johnstown Chiefs on Oct. 18th. It will be a rematch of Game 7 from the first-ever ECHL Finals. Wheeling will open their home schedule on Oct. 26 against the South Carolina Stingrays.
