Milwaukee Wave News Release
ST. CHARLES, Mo. - The Milwaukee Wave got a pair of goals apiece from Luan Oliveira and Marcio Leite as they defeated the St. Louis Ambush 20-9 on Friday night in front of 6,235 fans at the Family Arena. The win improved the first-place Wave's record to 15-2 and dropped the Ambush's record to 4-13.
The Wave would grab the lead inside the opening three minutes as J.C. Banks found the back of the net, and Leite would add a second with just under five minutes to play in the period. The Ambush would hit back quickly, however, as Matt Kimball scored 17 seconds later, but the Wave would restore their four-point advantage with nine seconds to play as Nick Perera capitalized on a defensive error to make it 6-2.
The teams exchanged goals in the opening 90 seconds of the second quarter, as Jonathann Greenfield gave the Wave a six-point lead 36 seconds in before Mike Roach responded with a beautiful maneuver; zig-zagging around Milwaukee players until he was in front of the goalkeeper's box and in position to send a soft shot into the net. Those would be the only goals of the quarter as Milwaukee took an 8-4 lead to the break.
The Wave exploded early in the third quarter with goals by Leite, Perera and Hewerton arriving 50 seconds apart that gave the Wave a 10-point lead 2:15 into the period. St. Louis was able to regroup following a timeout, and Jeff DiMaria pulled a goal back before Pat McSheehy scored a 3-pointer to reduce the deficit to five points. That would be as close as the Ambush would come, however, as Ian Bennett quickly got momentum back on the Wave's side before Oliveira's back-to-back goals made it 20-9 with a quarter the play.
From there, the Wave's defense took over as Marcel Feenstra recorded 10 saves, and his defenders recorded 20 blocked shots, to preserve the victory. The win allowed the Wave to remain one game ahead of the Baltimore Blast for first place in the league standings with three games remaining.
The Ambush journey across the state to tangle with the Missouri Comets (10-6) at the Independence Events Center at 7:35 p.m. CT on Saturday night, while the Wave return home to face the Comets on Sunday at U.S. Cellular Arena at 2 p.m. CT.
