Wave Falls Short in Overtime against St. Louis Ambush Sunday Afternoon
January 12, 2020 - Major Arena Soccer League (MASL)
Milwaukee Wave News Release
A lively crowd of just over 2,900 filled the UW-Milwaukee Panther Arena for the Wave's third home game, which also honored some of the finest of Southeastern Wisconsin's First Responders.
The Wave were ambushed by St. Louis in the early going down 2-0 at the half and 3-0 early in the third. The Wave would get on the board in the third with a goal by defensemen Stuart Grable. Unfortunately, the Ambush would score three more goals in the third, which lead to the wave being down 6-2 at the end of the third period.
However, miraculously, the Wave would score five unanswered goals in the fourth, aided in no small part to the efforts of additional attacker Angel 'Chino' Curiel, who managed to excellently play both offense and defense throughout much of the second half of the game. Alex Bradley (2 goals 1 assist), Luan Oliveira (2 goals), Ian Bennett, and Andrew Wiedabach all scored for the Wave in the rally which put the Wave on top with 3:25 left to play. St. Louis would score the tying goal with just 19 seconds left. Despite great offensive and defensive tenacity, the Wave were unable to contain the Ambush in overtime, losing 8-7. Oliveira extended his goal streak to 6 games in the loss for the Wave.
"This loss really stings," said Milwaukee Wave Head Coach Giuliano Oliviero. "It wasn't our best game by any means and I'm sure a lot of guys will admit that but at the end of the day we're going to have to rebound from this and learn from our mistakes so it doesn't happen again."
The Wave is now 6-2 on the year, ending their previous five game winning streak, with a 2-1 record against the St. Louis Ambush this season. However, the Wave does still have two chances to gain revenge against them at home later this season.
Despite the Wave's two losses coming at home, neither have come in regulation. The Wave take to the road to face the rival Kansas City Comets in the first half of a road-home doubleheader, playing Friday January 17 at Kansas City, before returning to the UW Panther Arena for a rematch with the Comets on Martin Luther King Jr. Day, Monday January 20th, a rare Day Game with a 11:07 am start time.
