Matthews (N.C.) - A lone goal by Je-Vaughn Watson secured a vital three points for the Charlotte Independence as they defeated Nashville SC, Saturday night at the Sportsplex at Matthews. Tonight's win marked the first win for the Independence in eight games.
"It's a huge result and win for us," said Independence head coach Mike Jeffries. "Credit to the guys for the heart they showed and the willingness to fight and battle. It has been a really difficult stretch so getting a win and shutout is huge to start building in the stretch run."
In the 25th minute, Watson gave the Independence the lead with a beautiful left-footed volley off of a Sam Vines corner. The goal marked Watson's first career goal for the Independence and gave Vines a team-high four assists.
"Sam plays with a lot of confidence, especially for a young guy," added Jeffries. "This year, I think it's been a good experience, maybe not expecting to play as much as he did, but then surviving difficult situations defensively and improving in his defensive qualities and his defensive reading of the game. I think it's been a really productive year for him."
The Independence kept up their strong outing in the second half, ultimately resulting in a clean sheet thanks to an outstanding performance from goalkeeper Brandon Miller. Miller had two crucial saves, including a point-blank save to deny Nashville forward Tucker Hume the equalizer in the 64th minute.
"Credit to Brandon tonight," said Vines. "He made some great saves and helped us get three points. Knowing that there is a guy that will make a save if you get beat boosts the whole team."
Join the Independence this Wednesday, September 5th when international soccer comes to Charlotte as the Independence host defending Liga MX champions, Club Santos Laguna, at the Sportsplex at Matthews.
