Waterloo Black Hawks News Release

Waterloo, Iowa-The Waterloo Black Hawks are proud to welcome the Midwest High School Hockey League champion Waterloo Warriors to Friday's Black Hawks game against the Sioux City Musketeers. The Warriors will be introduced during a ceremony at the first intermission.

High School students from throughout the Cedar Valley and northeast Iowa skate for the Warriors.

"All of our guys held the rope; that was our slogan," said Warriors Head Coach Shawn Weinke. "All year they've been learning, but they came together at the state tournament. It's just a great group of hard-working guys."

The Waterloo Warriors won eight of their first nine games to start a 22-8-2 regular season. They swept through the championship tournament in Ames during the final weekend of February. The fourth-seeded Warriors topped Mason City (4-2), the Des Moines Oak Leafs (6-0), and the Des Moines Capitals (4-0). The title was Waterloo's first since the 1990-1991 season, about the same year the seniors on this team were born. Senior goaltender Brian Dobes was recognized as the tournament MVP after recording two shutouts.

Individually, senior captain Jake Irey finished second in league scoring. Juniors Dawson Kuhlmann and Spencer Warren also concluded the year in the top ten, at sixth and tenth respectively. All three, along with Dobes were MHSHL All-Stars. Irey appeared in the All-Star game for a fourth time, while Dobes made his third appearance.

"We were certainly cheering for the Warriors," said Waterloo Black Hawks General Manager of Business Operations Doug Miller. "The Black Hawks are very proud of what the Warriors accomplished. We know the folks at Young Arena Friday will give the Warrior players and coaches a great ovation."

The Black Hawks host the Sioux City Musketeers Friday. The game begins at 7:05. Waterloo will wear John Deere jerseys Friday and Saturday. At the end of the weekend, those uniforms will be auctioned off with proceeds benefitting the Warriors, the Waterloo Youth Hockey Association, and the Learn to Play Hockey Program administered by Young Arena.
