Omaha Lancers News Release
COUNCIL BLUFFS, IA - The Omaha Lancers of the United States Hockey League (USHL) take their final trip East in the 2008-09 regular season this weekend when they head to Chicago on Friday and Indiana Saturday. With just nine regular season games remaining, the Lancers enter the upcoming weekend tied for 2nd in the West Division with the Fargo Force. With an overall record of 26-18-7 and 59 standings points, the Lancers remain seven points back of the 1st place Lincoln Stars and six standings points atop 4th place Sioux Falls. The top four teams in the West Division qualify for postseason play.
Omaha drew even in the division with Fargo Tuesday night following a 7-1 dismantling of the Stars at the Lincoln Icebox. After a scoreless opening period, the Lancers tallied three times in the middle frame including Seth Ambroz's third shorthanded goal this season. Omaha then put the game away with four 3rd period markers including Jake Hauswirth's 24th goal of the season and Louis Leblanc's team-leading 26th tally this year. Leblanc sits just one goal back of the USHL's league leaders in goals in Andrew Miller (CHI) and Mike Cichy (IND) and is just four goals shy of a 30-goal campaign - something the Lancers have only seen once in the last four seasons.
The Lancers busy week continues this Friday when they head to Chicago to take on the Steel for the final time this regular season. The Lancers are 2-0-1 against the Steel this year but fell in the most recent get-together by way of a 4-3 shootout loss at the Mid-America Center back on February 6th. Omaha has claimed the only previous meeting in Chicago with a 5-4 overtime victory back on November 21st.
Omaha then concludes its three-game road swing with a pass through Indiana to battle the Ice on Saturday. The Lancers are 1-0-2 against the Ice this season but haven't faced the 3rd place team in the East since a 2-1 shootout defeat in Indiana back on January 10th. The Ice currently sit just three points back of the Green Bay Gamblers for the top spot in all the USHL.
