Pre-Christmas Recap

Waterloo's final games before the holiday break were both in-state road trips. The Hawks visited the Des Moines Buccaneers on December 16th and claimed a 2-0 shutout with goals from Joe Rehkamp and Vince Hinostroza. Jay Williams stopped 30 shots. The following evening in Dubuque, Waterloo avoided being shutout by the Fighting Saints in a 5-1 loss thanks to a late two-man advantage goal by Ian McCoshen. Zemgus Girgensons scored twice for Dubuque.

O'Handley Achieves Notable Milestone

With P.K. O'Handley's 300th regular season win as head coach of the Black Hawks on December 16th, he continues to add to his franchise record. No other coach during Waterloo's modern junior era has claimed more than 100 victories. In fact, during his ten seasons with the Black Hawks, O'Handley has accumulated more victories than the eight head coaches who preceded him (Scott Koberinski, Scott Pionk, Barry Smith, Iain Duncan, Scott Brand, Scott Mikesch, Rob Grillo, and Nick Whelihan) combined.

Williams Blanks the Bucs

Jay Williams' shutout in Des Moines was the first by a Waterloo goalie this season and the third of Williams' USHL career. He was previously the most recent Hawk to blank an opponent with 26 saves against the Chicago Steel in a 10-0 win last March 23rd. Waterloo's last three shutouts have been on the road; the last whitewash by the Hawks at Young Arena was a 34 save performance by C.J. Motte on February 15th against the Buccaneers.

Hawks Near the Top

With Christmas representing an unofficial midpoint of the season, several Black Hawks enjoy notable statistical rankings. Forward Taylor Cammarata is tied for ninth in USHL scoring with 26 points; he ranks in eleventh for goals (twelve) and tenth in assists (14) respectively. Defenseman Peter Hand is tied for 2nd in league penalty minutes (67). Goalie Jay Williams has the sixth-best goals-against average (2.55).

Longtime Rival and New Years' Eve Notes

The Black Hawks visit their longest continuous rival - the Sioux City Musketeers - for the first time this season on Wednesday. The Hawks and Muskies first met in 1972. Returning home Saturday, Waterloo plays on New Years' Eve for the 14th consecutive season. It will be the first time the Hawks have matched up against the Cedar Rapids RoughRiders in the perennial contest since 2007.
