Waterloo Black Hawks News Release
Veteran Leaders
Game action at the World Junior A Challenge in Alberta begins Tuesday. Black Hawk forward Craig Smith has been named Team USA's captain. Nick Larson will serve as an Assistant Captain. Both Waterloo players also skated in the 2007 Challenge. Defenseman Lee Moffie and goalie Joe Howe are also on the team.
Milner Marker
Parker Milner has picked up victories in his first two appearances as a Black Hawk. That accomplishment has been rare for Waterloo goalies in recent seasons. Since 2002-2003, the only other net-minders to win their first two decisions are Kevin Regan (four consecutive wins), Drew O'Connell (two) and Matt DiGirolamo (three). Both of Milner's wins have been earned in overtime, including Saturday's game against Green Bay, which was settled in a shootout. So far in his brief career, Milner has posted a 2.34 goals-against average and a 91.5% save percentage. He is currently 52 minutes short of having his averages included among the USHL leaders.
Defensive Points
The Black Hawks have picked up three goals and 14 assists from defensemen in the first eight games of the season. Lee Moffie leads the Hawks defensive corps with two goals and five assists. Waterloo is in the middle of the pack as far as offense from defensemen. The Chicago Steel have the most production, with seven goals and 23 assists, while Fargo Force blue-liners have just two goals and four assists.
Hughes and Hoshaw
Defensemen George Hughes and Steven Hoshaw both made their Black Hawks debuts last week. Hughes missed the first six games due to injury. He assisted on a goal in his first game Wednesday against Chicago and was +3 in his two appearances. Hoshaw has been on the Hawks' affiliate list but had an opportunity to play Saturday with several players gone at the World Junior A Challenge. He blocked several shots and was -1.
