Cedar Rapids RoughRiders News Release
Streaking: The RoughRiders are riding a seven-game winning streak- the second longest winning streak in team history. The Riders put together a team record setting ten-game winning streak between November 1 and November 27, 2003.
Thirst for First: The Riders' win last Saturday night, combined with the Indiana Ice's shootout loss to the Waterloo Black Hawks Saturday evening, enabled the Riders to move one point ahead of Indiana in the race for first place overall in the USHL.
The Three Hundred: The RoughRiders and Coach and General Manager Mark Carlson are just four wins away from the three hundredth victory in team history. The RoughRiders have gone 296-200-48 since arriving in Cedar Rapids in 1999. Carlson, the only coach in Rider history, was officially credited with last Saturday's win even though he is currently away from the club coaching the U.S. team at the World Junior A Challenge in Camrose, Alberta.
Super Start: The Riders have started a season 8-1-0 for the first time in team history. The RoughRiders posted their best ever record after ten games in 2001-02, when they started the campaign 8-2-0.
Home Sweet Home: The RoughRiders have won their first four home games and have just completed a 3-0-0 home stand.
World Junior A Challenge: In addition to Carlson, Rider forwards Nick Oddo and Greg Burke and defensemen Matt Donovan and Darren Rowe are also representing the U.S. at the World Junior A Challenge. The foursome missed last Saturday's game and will also be unavailable for this weekend's tilts. The U.S. plays it first game of the tournament this evening against Germany.
Top of the Charts: The RoughRiders have scored more goals and given up fewer than any other team in the league. The Riders score 4.4 goals per game and allow just 1.7 per contest. The Riders have scored at least four goals in each of their last seven games and in eight of nine on the season. Cedar Rapids has given up two goals or fewer in each of their last six games and eight of their first nine.
P.K. O.K.: The RoughRiders lead the league in penalty killing (95.1 percent), having given up just two power play goals all season and surrendered just a single 5-on-4 goal. The Riders, who have scored a league-leading four shorthanded goals this season, have actually outscored opponents while on the disadvantage. The Riders have been shorthanded less than half as many times (41) as they have been on the power play (83).
Mighty Mike: Mike Seidel (5-10-15) is tied for the league lead in points and assists. Seidel is in the midst of a seven game point scoring streak (5-9-14). He has also collected at least one assist in each of his last seven games to move within one game of the team record for longest assist streak currently shared by Chad Costello (December 17, 2005 through January 14, 2006) and Shane Lovdahl (December 11, 2004 through January 7, 2005). In addition, Seidel has recorded at least two points in each of his last six games.
