Waterloo Black Hawks News Release

Three Contenders

The Black Hawks play three of the United States Hockey League's top four overall teams during the week ahead. Tuesday at Young Arena, Waterloo hosts the Sioux City Musketeers at 7:05 p.m. The Hawks are coming off a 6-2 win against Sioux City Saturday. Tuesday's game is the season series finale; a regulation win would give the Hawks a split with their oldest rivals. Friday at 7:05, Waterloo will host the Green Bay Gamblers. Green Bay is tied for fourth in the league and reached 50 points Sunday by earning an overtime point against the Chicago Steel. The week concludes with a short trip to Dubuque for a 7:05 p.m. Saturday contest. Through five head-to-head games, each team has earned six standings points.

Approaching a Milestone Win

Jack Spicer made 25 saves on Saturday during a home victory against the Sioux City Musketeers. The result moves his record to 8-6-1 this season. After 21 wins last year, Spicer is on the cusp of 30 career victories, which would make him the 11th goaltender during Waterloo's junior era to reach that mark. Joe Howe and Eamon McAdam are each currently one ahead of him, tied for ninth on the team wins list.

Lots of Hawks

Last weekend, Nicholas Kosiba, Brody Cook, and Peyton Blair all made their Black Hawks debuts. Adding those three forwards to Waterloo's lineup means that 39 different players have appeared in at least one game this season. In 2022/23, there were 40 different Hawks who dressed at least once. Last year's group included Michael Phelan, Eero Butella, and Teddy Townsend; each of those current Waterloo regulars played in five games or fewer while on the team's affiliate list.

Four-in-One

John Mustard scored four times on Saturday during the Hawks' 6-2 victory over Sioux City. It was one of three four-goal games by a USHL player during 2023/24. The last Waterloo skater with four goals on one night was Connor Brown during a road playoff game against the Lincoln Stars on April 27, 2022. However, it hadn't happened during the regular season, nor on home ice, since April 2, 2016. Yuri Terao was the top performer that night. His big game also came against the Sioux City Musketeers.

Recent Games

Black Hawks Captain Myles Hilman opened the weekend with a three-point night against the Madison Capitols on Friday. Hilman followed-up an early assist with two goals, including the game-winner scored with 1:12 left in the third period. Waterloo won 4-3. Saturday John Mustard scored in all three periods, including two goals in the second, Gavyn Thoreson recorded four assists, and Waterloo topped the Sioux City Musketeers 6-2.
