Waterloo Black Hawks News Release

Waterloo, Iowa - John Mustard scored four times on Saturday, vaulting himself among the top handful of United States Hockey League goal-scorers this season and winning the USHL Forward of the Week award presented by the league on Monday.

Saturday's performance in a 6-2 victory against the Sioux City Musketeers was Mustard's second hat trick of the season. He was also named the USHL Forward of the Week in the wake of the previous big night; the league recognized him on November 27th following three goals against the Cedar Rapids RoughRiders November 25th. Mustard is currently one of just two players with multiple "USHL Forward of the Week" credits in 2023/24, joining Austin Burnevik of the Madison Capitols.

The 17-year-old from New Jersey now has 21 goals this season, tying for fourth in the league. He is one of six players with 20 or more goals at this stage of the season and is also the league's leading rookie scorer. Mustard paces USHL rookies in points (38) as well as goals.

On Saturday, Mustard served early notice that he would have an outsized impact on the game. His first goal gave Waterloo the lead just 1:09 into the opening period. Mustard scored again during the middle of the second, then completed his hat trick during a power play with less than a minute remaining before intermission. The fourth goal during his big night was an empty-netter. Mustard was credited with 10 shots on goal, the most by a Black Hawk in one game this season. The victory moved Waterloo into third place in the USHL Western Conference.

Mustard's weekend also included an assist on Friday during the Hawks' 4-3 victory against the Madison Capitols. He was +3 during the two games.

During 36 appearances in 2023/24, Mustard has 21 goals and 17 points, ranking second among Waterloo skaters with 38 points. He paces the team with five game-winning goals (his latest on Saturday), seven power play goals and 13 power play points.

Mustard is committed to Providence. In mid-January, he was noted as the 41st-ranked prospect among North American skaters eligible for the 2024 NHL Draft by NHL Central Scouting.

This season, Mustard is one of three Black Hawks who has won a USHL weekly award. Jack Spicer was the USHL Goaltender of the Week on January 2nd, and Jakub Altrichter claimed the Forward of the Week title on October 16th.

Mustard and the Black Hawks host a rematch with the Sioux City Musketeers on Tuesday at 7:05 p.m.
