Waterloo Black Hawks News Release
One Night Only
The Hawks host the Des Moines Buccaneers (7-9-3) this Friday at 7:05 p.m. Although the Bucs are Waterloo's most prolific opponent this winter, the teams have met just once during the first two months of the schedule. Des Moines won that game 6-1 on October 9th. The Buccaneers last Young Arena appearance in a meaningful contest was on April 24th when the Hawks capped the 2020/21 season with a 6-3 win. Meanwhile, Waterloo's off-day this Saturday is the first of four consecutive Saturdays without a game, home or away.
Marauding Buccaneer Power Play
The Des Moines Buccaneers own the best road power play in the USHL. As the away team, Des Moines has scored on 13 of their 42 chances (31 percent) this season. The figure is far ahead of what the Bucs have done on home ice (6-for-43, 14 percent). Des Moines' power play success is one of the factors which has contributed to the club having the highest shooting percentage (13.5) of any Western Conference team.
Procious Produces Solid Weekend
Hawks defenseman Tyler Procious scored his first goal of the season on Friday. It came during the third period and yielded the Hawks' first multigoal lead of the night, helping Waterloo on their way to a 5-2 win versus the Sioux Falls Stampede. Procious had one goal last season as a member of the Muskegon Lumberjacks. He also added an assist on Saturday, making him one of only two Waterloo players with a point in both weekend games (James Hong was the other). Procious' Friday tally made him the 20th different Black Hawk with a goal this winter, including eight Waterloo defensemen.
Stampede Slip Away
The Black Hawks were unable to defeat the Sioux Falls Stampede last Saturday, despite holding the visitors to two goals. The 2-1 loss was just the second time in 2021/22 that Waterloo has fallen in regulation when holding an opponent to three goals or fewer. The Hawks are 9-2-2 in those circumstances. The other loss also came on home ice during a 3-2 decision against the Lincoln Stars on October 22nd.
Recent Games
The Black Hawks and Sioux Falls Stampede split their two-game set last weekend. Five different Waterloo players recorded goals Friday, with Tucker Shedd notching the decisive tally in the second period of a 5-2 Hawks victory. John Waldron and Michael LaStarza each assisted on Shedd's goal, and both finished the night with two assists. On Saturday, James Hong tallied the lone Waterloo score with less than a second remaining, and Waterloo fell 2-1, despite a 36-28 shots advantage. Of the Hawks shots on goal, 23 of them came during the final 20 minutes, the most by any USHL team in a third period this season.
