Waterloo Black Hawks Weekly Preview
November 9, 2021 - United States Hockey League (USHL)
Waterloo Black Hawks News Release
Back to Kearney for Two
For the second time this season, the Waterloo Black Hawks trek to Kearney, Nebraska. Games on Friday and Saturday versus the Tri-City Storm (9-2-0) begin at 7:05 p.m. both nights. Tri-City's 4-1 Sunday win against the Sioux City Musketeers lifted the Storm into sole possession of first place in the United States Hockey League Western Conference. On October 8th, Waterloo fell to Tri-City 6-2 at Viaero Center.
Top Goalies
Among USHL goaltenders who have played a minimum of 180 minutes this season, there are currently four with a goals-against average under 2.00. Three of them could play in the Waterloo-Tri-City series this weekend. Russian native Arsenii Sergeev has the USHL's best GAA (1.14) and save percentage (.954), to go with a 6-1-0 record. Waterloo's Jack Williams dipped to 1.97 after the Hawks blanked the Sioux Falls Stampede 3-0 last Saturday. Tri-City's Chase Clark is fractionally behind Williams at 1.99 in four appearances, including a 29-save performance against the Hawks earlier this year.
Spreading Around the Scoring
Tucker Shedd, Owen Baker, and Gavin O'Connell each scored his first USHL goal last weekend. Baker quickly notched another to help the Hawks to a 3-0 win against the Sioux Falls Stampede on Saturday. Adding that trio of scorers to Waterloo's stat sheet, the team's 36 goals this season have been spread among 18 different skaters. Every player who has appeared in a Hawks game (including goalies Jack Williams and Emmett Croteau) has at least one point from a goal or assist.
Black Hawks Rookies
The Black Hawks have a notable crop of eight rookies on the 2021/22 roster. By the league's precise definition, a "rookie" cannot have played in more than 10 games during a previous USHL season, nor be more than in his first year of NHL Draft eligibility for 2022 (born after September 15, 2003). Gavin O'Connell leads the Hawks' rookie class with six points (one goal, five assists). O'Connell, Owen Baker, James Hong, and Adam Cardona have played in every Waterloo game this fall.
Recent Games
The Hawks' three-game winning streak was cut short on Friday when Waterloo fell to the Dubuque Fighting Saints 5-1. Tucker Shedd scored Waterloo's lone Friday goal. The last time the Hawks won four-in-a-row was a sequence from February 28 to March 7, 2020, just days before the COVID-19 pandemic ended the 2019/20 USHL season. On the road Saturday, the Hawks hit the net once in each period for a 3-0 victory against the Sioux Falls Stampede. Jack Williams produced his league-leading third shutout of the season with 25 saves.
