Fargo Comes Calling

The Fargo Force visit Young Arena for games on Friday and Saturday, both beginning at 7:05 p.m. Fargo enters the weekend having played fewer games than any other United States Hockey League Western Conference team: 35. Nonetheless, the Force will enter the weekend with third place in the conference. They will play three times during the trip, adding a visit to Sioux City Sunday. Waterloo and Fargo have met once this season; the Black Hawks won a 3-2 overtime decision during the USHL Fall Classic in September.

A Half Dozen in Double Figures

Kyle Haskins became the sixth Black Hawk to individually record ten goals this season when he scored during the first period on Saturday. A season ago, Haskins was one of eight Waterloo players with at least ten goals. Griffin Ness and Wyatt Schingoethe have also achieved the feat in both years. The Hawks are on the cusp of having two more players join this year's group of ten-goal-scorers: Ryan Drkulec and Patrick Guzzo each have nine, while Joe Cassetti has seven.

Home and Away on the Power Play

The last two weekends continued the Hawks' divergent power play trend. On home ice against the Muskegon Lumberjacks and National Team Development Program January 24th and 25th, Waterloo scored on three of ten opportunities. Last weekend in Sioux Falls, the Hawks were turned away on all five chances. Waterloo converts at a league-leading power play rate of 25.4 percent home, while ranking 15th of the league's 16 teams at 12.9 percent in opposing buildings.

January by the Numbers

Waterloo produced a 5-3-1 record during January, while earning three road victories. Gabriel Carriere was in net for three of the wins, and each of those contests was a game settled by a one-goal margin. Offensively, Griffin Ness paced the Hawks with eight goals and 14 points in nine games. Ness also had a team-best +10 plus/minus differential. Xander Lamppa had seven assists, the most in that statistical category. Ness, Lamppa, and Ryan Drkulec (eight points in seven appearances) each averaged at least a point per game in January.

Weekly Recap

After a 3-2 overtime loss Friday and a 5-4 loss in regulation Saturday, the Black Hawks have now been involved in 18 one-goal margin games this season, tied for the most in the USHL. The Sioux Falls Stampede edged Waterloo both nights. In Friday's loss, Wyatt Schingoethe scored both Hawks goals. Saturday, a three-goal third period allowed Waterloo to tie the game temporarily before Sioux Falls notched the winner. The Cedar Rapids RoughRiders and Dubuque Fighting Saints have also played 18 one-goal games.
