Three for Thanksgiving Weekend

The Hawks take the ice Thursday, Friday, and Saturday. The sequence is Waterloo's second and final stretch of three-games-in-three-days during 2019/20. Earlier this month, from November 1-3, the Hawks went 1-1-1 versus the Muskegon Lumberjacks (overtime loss), Chicago Steel (regulation loss), and Madison Capitols (win). Waterloo hosts the Cedar Rapids RoughRiders at 7:05 p.m. on Thanksgiving. It will be the 20th consecutive head-to-head matchups between the teams on the holiday. Friday, the Hawks visit the Des Moines Buccaneers at 7:05; the Bucs are the only USHL team without a regulation loss in their home rink. Saturday is a RoughRider rematch at Cedar Rapids Ice Arena, also beginning at 7:05 p.m.

Wrapping Up the Homestand

Thursday's game is the last of five-in-a-row at Young Arena. Waterloo is 3-1-0 during the season's longest homestand. So far, Ryder Rolston and Connor Caponi each have three goals, while Ethan Szmagaj has a team-high four assists. Logan Stein was in net for two of the three wins.

Thanksgiving Seconds

Eleven Waterloo players are anticipated to make their second appearance in the traditional Thanksgiving home game. The returning group includes Brehdan Engum, who scored a goal in last season's 4-1 win against the RoughRiders. Wyatt Schingoethe and Ethan Szmagaj each had assists. Logan Stein was in net for the victory, making 13 saves. Among the RoughRiders, six players are still on the roster after playing in the 2018 game.

Timing is Everything

Ryder Rolston scored with just over 20 seconds remaining in the second period Saturday during Waterloo's 4-2 win against the Cedar Rapids RoughRiders. It was the eighth time during the Hawks' first 17 games that Waterloo has scored a goal with less than a minute to go in a period. Four of those eight goals have been recorded with under 10 seconds on the clock. Rolston's buzzer-beating score Saturday marked the third time the Hawks have found the net in the last minute of a period against Cedar Rapids. None of Waterloo's goals in the last 60 seconds have been empty-netters. In the same circumstances, opponents have scored six goals against the Hawks (just one of them was into an open net during a six-on-five situation).

Weekend Recap

The Hawks suffered their largest loss of the season on Friday during a 7-1 decision against the Dubuque Fighting Saints. Kyle Haskins recorded the lone Waterloo goal. One night later, the Hawks recovered to top the Cedar Rapids RoughRiders, 4-2. Ryder Rolston scored twice, including the game-winner, and Griffin Ness had three points (one goal, two assists).
