Waterloo Black Hawks News Release

Buccaneers Bound for Waterloo

On Saturday at 7:05 p.m., the Black Hawks host the Des Moines Buccaneers for the first of four head-to-head games at Young Arena this season. In total, the teams will play eight times in 2019/20. Last season, Waterloo was 2-0-2 versus the Bucs. Since the United States Hockey League converted to exclusively junior-aged players in 1979/80, Waterloo has played 212 regular season games versus Des Moines. That ranks second only to the series against the Sioux City Musketeers (221 games). The only time that the Black Hawks met the Bucs more than eight times in a season was in 1982/83, when Des Moines won nine of ten matchups.

Spread the Celebration

Facing the Cedar Rapids RoughRiders last Friday, Kyle Haskins scored the game-winning goal with 41 seconds remaining in regulation. During Saturday's 1-0 win against the Tri-City Storm, Connor Caponi recorded the only goal (the game-winner by default). With those tallies, five different Waterloo players have scored game-winning goals during the Hawks' opening five victories. The others doing the honors this year were Aaron Bohlinger, Wyatt Schingoethe, and Ondrej Psenicka. In 2018/19, Waterloo's 38 game-winning scores were distributed among 14 different players. That included three for Schingoethe and two for Haskins.

Late Rallies Rare

The Black Hawks entered the third period of Friday's matchup versus the RoughRiders trailing the home team 3-1. Recovering for a 4-3 win, Waterloo now has one of only four successful comebacks under those circumstances during the first 43 games played on this year's USHL schedule. Across the league, teams are collectively 4-29-4 when trailing at the end of 40 minutes (six games have gone to the third period tied). The Dubuque Fighting Saints, Fargo Force, and Madison Capitols own the other comparable wins. In 2018/19, Waterloo had a relatively-successful mark of 4-9-3 when down at the second intermission.

Superlative Shot Performance

Waterloo put 20 shots on net during the first period against Cedar Rapids Friday. That ties as the most shots by one team in any period so far this season. For the night, the Hawks finished with 44 shots on goal. At this stage of 2019/20, the Des Moines Buccaneers have had the most shots in a game: 50 versus the Sioux Falls Stampede on September 28th. Waterloo and Des Moines are tied for third in average shots on goal at 31.8 per game.

Weekend Recap

Ryan Drkulec had a third period assist, then scored the game-tying goal as the Hawks bounced past the Cedar Rapids RoughRiders, 4-3, thanks to a rousing third period Friday. Connor Caponi had the lone goal Saturday in a 1-0 win. Over the two games, Logan Stein stopped 44 of 45 shots for two wins.
