Lincoln and Sioux City Again

The Black Hawks continue a sequence of eight consecutive games against USHL Western Conference opponents on Friday and Saturday, visiting the Lincoln Stars and hosting the Sioux City Musketeers respectively. Both games begin at 7:05 p.m. Waterloo has reached the postseason during six of seven years since being shifted to the Western Conference in 2011/12. The Hawks have meet either Lincoln (2012, 2016, and 2018) or Sioux City (2014 and 2017) amidst all but one of those playoff efforts. In 2018/19, the Hawks are 2-1-0 against the Stars; Friday's game completes the season series. Waterloo is 3-1-0 versus the Musketeers with two matchups remaining this season.

Shorthanded Scoring

The Hawks were one of the USHL's most prolific shorthanded scoring teams over the first three months of the schedule. However, a "shorty" by Connor Caponi Sunday against the Tri-City Storm was the first for Waterloo since January 5th versus the Lincoln Stars. Shorthanded goals have not guaranteed overall success; the Hawks have lost the last two games in which they have scored a shorthanded goal and are now 5-2-1 on those nights.

Engum Engaging in the Offense

Defenseman Brehdan Engum was the only Black Hawk to record a point in all three Waterloo games last weekend. He notched assists on Friday and Saturday, then scored his third goal of the season on Sunday. Engum now has ten points in 30 games since being traded to the Hawks from the Central Illinois Flying Aces. Six of his points have been delivered in his last 11 appearances.

Penalty Shots

Brendan Furry of the Tri-City Storm converted a penalty shot against Waterloo late in Sunday's 6-3 loss. The ruling was made after the puck was covered in the Black Hawks' crease by a Waterloo defenseman. It was the first time this season that the Hawks have been involved on either end of a penalty shot situation. Last season, Waterloo denied three opposing penalty shots and converted one of three. Jack Drury did it on Thanksgiving.

Weekly Recap

A three-goal third period gave the Waterloo Black Hawks a 3-0 win against the Des Moines Buccaneers on Friday. Emil Ohrvall ended the scoreless start more than seven minutes into the final period, and Logan Stein made 24 saves. The following night, Hank Sorensen scored the lone Black Hawk goal and the Cedar Rapids RoughRiders stayed out of reach in the 2-1 result. Capping the three-game weekend Sunday, the Tri-City Storm scored two goals in each period, on the way to a 6-3 decision. Waterloo's Patrick Guzzo had a goal and an assists. The Hawks outshot the Storm 43-23.
