Waterloo Black Hawks Weekly Preview

December 18, 2018 - United States Hockey League (USHL)
Waterloo Black Hawks News Release

Finishing Up 2018

After Christmas, the Black Hawks return to action for three games - including two at home - before the beginning of 2019. Waterloo travels to Sioux Falls and collides with the Stampede on Thursday, December 27th (7:05 p.m.). It will be the Hawks' first game against Sioux Falls since a 6-5 overtime loss on October 19th. The teams will still have four more meetings on the schedule after next Thursday, including three dates at Young Arena. On December 29th and 31st, games at Young Arena will complete Waterloo's season series with two visiting opponents. The Youngstown Phantoms appear on the first of those nights (7:05 p.m). The Phantoms lead the USHL at nearly 19 penalty minutes per game, yet their opponents collectively take even more (21.7 per contest). The Hawks then meet the Madison Capitols on New Year's Eve (6:05 p.m.). It will be the third matchup between the teams in December; Waterloo prevailed 6-2 on December 7th and 5-3 on December 15th.

Sorensen Soaring

Veteran defenseman Hank Sorensen leads the Hawks rearguard corps with 18 points (three goals, 15 assists) after picking up a goal and three assists last weekend. That count currently ties for fifth-highest on the team in 2018/19, and also places him in fifth place (tied) among all league defensemen. Sorensen is only four points shy of the 22 he accumulated last year. His three-point game versus the Lincoln Stars last Friday matched a career high, achieved for the third time.

Bakich is Back

Solag Bakich was sidelined for the first 24 games of 2018/19. The Notre Dame recruit made his season debut on Friday versus the Lincoln Stars. It was the 50th regular season appearance of his career as a Black Hawk. The next night in Madison, Bakich picked up his first point of the season with an assist on Kyle Haskins' eventually game-winning goal in Waterloo's 5-3 result against the Capitols.

Five for Scoring

Through the first 26 games of the 2018/19 regular season, the Black Hawks have scored five or more goals 11 times. By contrast, Waterloo had 16 five-goal games during the entire 2018/19 schedule. Last Saturday, Dane Montgomery's first USHL goal was the 100th for the Hawks this season. Currently, Waterloo is one of only two teams with more than 100 goals this year. The Muskegon Lumberjacks are the other at 117.

Weekly Recap

Emil Ohrvall and Vladislav Firstov each scored two goals Friday, providing the bulk of the offense in a 5-4 Waterloo win against the Lincoln Stars. Saturday in Madison, Kyle Haskins led the way against the Capitols with a pair of goals. It was Haskins' first multigoal USHL game.
