Sioux Falls Stampede News Release
Urbandale, IA - The Sioux Falls Stampede threw 40 shots on goal, but couldn't solve Des Moines Buccaneers goaltender Roman Durny and fell 2-0 Tuesday night at Buccaneer Arena. The loss ended the Herd's (13-8-3) four-game winning streak and marked their first regulation loss in the month of December where they still hold a 5-1-1 mark. Alec Calvaruso put up another stellar performance in goal, stopping 29 of 30 shots on the night.
The Stampede came out firing in the first period and outshot the Bucs 21-11. Sioux Falls came close to scoring several times, but Durny was on top of his game. Des Moines had several good scoring chances of their own, but Calvaruso put on a show with two highlight reel goals in between the pipes and the game remained scoreless after one.
In the second, both teams exchanged some scoring chances, but it remained scoreless until the 14:32 mark when Sam Renlund scored for Des Moines. Scooter Brickey played the puck to the high slot where Renlund blasted a shot that traveled through traffic and into the upper right-hand corner of the net for a 1-0 advantage.
Sioux Falls tried to come back in the third, but ran into a little penalty trouble. The penalty kill unit was strong all night and killed off both of Des Moines chances to keep it a one-goal game. The Stampede pulled Calvaruso in the final minute for an extra attacker, but Des Moines goaltender Durny made history when he picked up the puck behind his own net and shot the puck perfectly down the ice and into the net to seal a 2-0 victory for Des Moines.
The Stampede outshot the Bucs 40-31 on the night and finished 0-for-3 on the power play while Des Moines finished 0-for-4.
Sioux Falls is now off for the holiday break and will return to action next Thursday, December 27th when they host the Waterloo Black Hawks at 7:05 PM. The Herd are also home on New Year's Eve for a 6:05 PM game against Lincoln. Tickets for both games are on sale now through the PREMIER Center or any Ticketmaster outlet.
