Getting to Know NTDP

Road games on Friday and Saturday pit the Black Hawks against the U.S. National Team Development Program Under-18s. The strong collection of American players born in 1999 is the older unit within the Plymouth, Michigan-based NTDP. They play slightly less than half of the Program's USHL games, while also meeting college and international opponents. This winter, the U-18s have victories against NCAA Division I opponents Minnesota-Duluth, Maine, and Arizona State. They are 12-5-1 versus USHL clubs since the start of the 2016/17 regular season. Waterloo has not met either half of the National Team Development Program this winter; in January of 2016, the Hawks split two games with last season's U-18 squad.

Fab Feb

Waterloo flew high in February, recording an 8-0-1 record for the month while outscoring opponents 49-19 in aggregate. On an individual basis, Kevin Charyszyn, Garrett Wait, Nick Swaney, and Alex Limoges each averaged more than a point per game for the Hawks. Charyszyn paced the team with 18 points and 13 goals. Wait was the assist leader at ten. Goaltender Peter Thome was in net for five of the wins, including one shutout.

Swaney on the Climb

Nick Swaney's goals during a 5-3 win against the Omaha Lancers on Saturday were his 60th and 61st during the regular season play in his USHL career. He currently ranks eighth on the Hawks' junior era career list, one shy of 1980s star Tom Bissett. Swaney is also within close proximity of sixth-ranked Brian Canady (sixth, 64 goals) and Taylor Cammarata (fifth, 65 goals). Rod Taylor is Waterloo's career junior era goal leader at 115.

A Different Midpoint

Games last weekend against the Bloomington Thunder and Omaha Lancers completed the Hawks' regular season series against both opponents. Waterloo has now wrapped up scheduled matchups with eight of the USHL's clubs and will still see eight opponents during the course of 13 games remaining on the schedule. The Hawks' cumulative record this season against the teams they will face between now and April 8th is 12-9-1. Waterloo went 19-3-3 against Bloomington, Green Bay, Lincoln, Muskegon, Omaha, Sioux Falls, Tri-City, and Youngstown, the teams they will not see again.

Weekly Recap

Kevin Charyszyn and Mikey Anderson each recorded four points and the Black Hawks never trailed during respective 5-2 and 5-3 wins against the Bloomington Thunder and Omaha Lancers. Thirteen different Waterloo players recorded at least one point. The Hawks were also an efficient three-for-eight in power play situations. Goaltender Peter Thome picked up the win each night, turning away 34 of 39 shots on goal.
