Fargo on Deck

The Black Hawks host the Fargo Force on Friday and Saturday this weekend. The two teams have had reciprocal results recently. Waterloo has been on the short side of three consecutive decisions; Fargo has won three-in-a-row. Each of the Force victories in December have come in games settled by shootouts. Two of those three have been on the road, and the club is among the USHL's best away from home, tied for the league lead with eight traveling wins. The Hawks claimed the only previous matchup this season - a game played at Young Arena - 5-1 on October 3rd, which is one of just four Force road losses. Waterloo and Fargo are both led offensively by international players with identical point totals: the Hawks' Yuri Terao and the Force's Denis Smirnov have 18 points apiece and are tied for 16th in overall USHL scoring.

Percentage Notes

With four goals on 39 shots Saturday against the Dubuque Fighting Saints, the Black Hawks were scoring at almost exactly their season-long rate. So far in 2015/16, Waterloo has averaged a goal on one out of every ten shots. The Hawks 10% clip ranks eighth in the league. Individually, Nick Swaney - who scored against the Saints - leads the team in gross shots on goal (72), while ranking second in shooting percentage (15.3%). As a team, Fargo is tied for 16th in shooting percentage (7.2%). The National Team Development Program leads the league at 11.8%.

Cotton Makes His Point(s)

David Cotton contributed a goal and an assist Saturday during Waterloo's 7-4 loss at Dubuque. The Boston College recruit now has four multi-point games this season. He is currently among the Hawks' leaders in both goals (6, third) and assists (8, sixth). All but three of Cotton's points this season have been recorded at even strength, including both of his entries on Saturday's scoresheet.

A Successful Step

Waterloo converted two of six power plays at Dubuque Saturday. Nick Swaney and Liam Pecararo were responsible for the goals. Over the course of 47 previous power play opportunities on the road this season, the Hawks had been limited to one tally. However, Waterloo's special teams results have been much different on home ice, where the Hawks have scored seven times in 31 chances (22.6%).

Weekly Recap

Four second period goals by the Dubuque Fighting Saints Saturday lifted them past the Black Hawks in a 7-4 decision. Waterloo fired 39 shots on goal, five short of a season-high set against the Madison Capitols on November 25th. David Cotton and Shane Bowers each had multiple points.
