Waterloo Black Hawks News Release
Similarities and Differences
As the Waterloo Black Hawks and Indiana Ice circle toward the Clark Cup Finals, the two clubs share some commonalities. Each played seven games during the opening two rounds of the playoffs: Waterloo advanced past the Sioux Falls Stampede in three games and the Sioux City Musketeers in four, while Indiana started with a set of four against the Green Bay Gamblers, then swept the Dubuque Fighting Saints. The Hawks and Ice both have one Clark Cup to their credit (Waterloo in 2004, Indiana in 2009). The two teams have never met for a game at Young Arena during the postseason. Meanwhile, the Black Hawks reached this year's Finals as the USHL's highest-scoring team in the regular season and playoffs. The Ice allow the league's fewest goals.
Scribbling in the Playoff Record Book
Defenseman Brandon Montour has scratched out a place in the Waterloo Black Hawks' career playoff record book. In just one postseason, the University of Massachusetts recruit currently is tied for 14th with nine assists and ranks in a 17th-place tie with 14 points. If he records two assists and four points during the Clark Cup Finals, those statistics would push Montour's ranking to fifth in both categories.
Four with Five
Brandon Montour, Blake Winiecki, Tyler Sheehy, and Drew Melanson have each scored five goals during the Clark Cup playoffs. The small group's total surpasses the 19 goals Waterloo recorded as a team during five games in the 2013 postseason. If one more Black Hawk reaches five goals before the Finals are concluded, Waterloo would become the first team with five different five-goal scorers in the playoffs since the Indiana Ice had six in 2009. Currently, Liam Pecararo has three goals; four other Hawks have two apiece.
Pecararo Coming On Strong
Forward Liam Pecararo recorded four points (one goal, three assists) during two weekend road games against the Sioux City Musketeers. The big finish tied him with Brandon Montour as the leading scorer during the Semifinal series. Both had five points. In total, the University of Maine-committed veteran has three goals and seven assists in seven playoff games.
Weekly Recap
Brandon Montour scored with just 4.3 seconds remaining in regulation Friday to force overtime during Game Three of the Semifinals in Sioux City. The Musketeers went on to prevail, 4-3. However, Waterloo bounced back to win Game Four, 5-1, on Sunday and clinched the series in four games. Eight different Black Hawks scored goals during the weekend. Cal Petersen was in net for both matchups, stopping 72 of 77 shots on net. The veteran goalie now leads the USHL in playoff wins (six) and minutes played (435:50).
