Waterloo Black Hawks News Release

Dueling with Dubuque

It's the second of three single-game weeks to open the 2013/14 USHL season for the Waterloo Black Hawks, so Waterloo's full attention is turned to the defending Clark and Anderson Cup champion Dubuque Fighting Saints. Friday's matchup at Young Arena will be the first of the year for the visiting squad, led by new Head Coach Matt Shaw. In eight meetings last season, the Hawks posted a 6-2-0 record versus the Saints. No other USHL club won more than three contests against Dubuque.

Up to Ten

As many as ten Waterloo Black Hawks could play their first regular season home game at Young Arena Friday. Among the group, Brandon Montour is off to a strong start after notching a pair of assists in Chicago last Saturday. The defenseman is one of three new players on this season's roster to come to Waterloo from beyond the border. The Oshweken, Ontario native is joined by Patrick Russell from Birkenrod, Denmark and Mathias Israelsson from Goteborg, Sweden. Of the new arrivals, Woodbury, Minnesota resident Hayden Shaw's hometown is the closest to Waterloo, just 192 miles to the north.

Pecararo Packs a Punch

Forward Liam Pecararo made a hearty contribution to last weekend's season opening 3-2 Hawks victory. The Maine recruit scored a pair of goals. As a rookie last season, Pecararo score eight times in 36 contests. Saturday was the first multigoal game of his USHL career, and it was the third time he has had multiple points in one contest. Pecararo is likely to continue accumulating points if he keeps putting the puck on net; Saturday he led all players with six shots on goal.

Rising in the East

The Black Hawks' first three games of the season are all against opponents from the USHL Eastern Conference. A season ago, Waterloo owned the USHL's best record versus teams from the opposite conference, 24-10-0. Among returning veterans, Mark Friedman did the most damage in those games, scoring 16 points, while Cal Petersen recorded 12 of his 21 wins versus teams of that longitudinal persuasion. In 2013/14, 25 of 60 total contests on the schedule will be against clubs from the Eastern Conference.

Weekly Recap

Waterloo earned two standings points with a 3-2 victory against the Chicago Steel. Liam Pecararo found the net twice and Brandon Montour recorded two assists. Brandon Salerno delivered the game-winner. Chicago rallied from a 3-0 second period deficit to make the game a nail-biter. However, Cal Petersen turned in 26 saves for the 25th regular season win of his USHL career.
