Dubuque Fighting Saints News Release
DUBUQUE, IA- The Dubuque Fighting Saints announced today a partnership with Two by Two Character Development for the team's "Live Like A Saint" educational program presented at local area schools. The Fighting Saints and Two by Two have teamed up to create a program for local schools that promotes character traits, such as knowledge, kindness, respect, responsibility, and teamwork, all while helping inform students about the game of hockey and the importance of physical education.
Since 2005, Two by Two has developed research-based, character education curriculum based on 21st Century education standards - the skills children need to succeed in work, school, and life. The Dubuque non-profit organization has worked with educators in many local schools and is excited to be partnering with the Fighting Saints to continue sharing their message to students.
"Two by Two is grateful for the opportunity to partner with the entire Fighting Saints organization, including the coaches, players and staff to weave Two by Two's character curriculum into the 'Live Like a Saint' program," said Ginger J. Sakas, CEO and President of Two by Two. "We are excited about the impact this partnership will have in the Tri-State area."
With Fighting Saints players ranging in age from 16-20 years old, many players are students as well, with some attending local high schools and others working on college coursework, so education is something that is important to the team as players work towards earning college scholarships. With that said, the team has been very active in the local community since 2010 visiting numerous schools in the Tri-State region to promote education and the game of hockey.
The partnership with Two by Two will continue to help the Fighting Saints share the message of education with students and grow the curriculum students learn. With the partnership, the Fighting Saints will share Two by Two's message of developing responsible citizens of strong character who care for, respect, and appreciate people, animals, and the environment. The curriculum developed by Two by Two includes kindness, respect, responsibility, empathy, cooperation, perseverance, and citizenship. Goals of Two by Two's programs are to help children grow into empathetic, responsible, and productive citizens.
At "Live Like a Saint" assemblies, Fighting Saints players, coaches, team mascot, Bernie, pass along the message of hard work, commitment to academics, and a bit of hockey knowledge during the half-hour program. The "Live Like a Saint" assemblies are hosted by Dubuque Fighting Saints broadcaster Zack Fisch who interacts with the crowd, and helps promote respect and cooperation with students. Students will also be asked to volunteer to try the different aspects of the game of hockey, including taking the stage and trying on oversized protective gear, or attempting to follow guidance to learn to shoot and score a goal while their classmates cheer them on.
