Waterloo Black Hawks News Release

Shortening the List

The only team the Waterloo Black Hawks have not defeated this season is the last opponent remaining on the schedule. Waterloo faces the Indiana Ice Saturday and Sunday in Indianapolis. The only other meetings between the clubs this winter were on back-to-back nights at Young Arena, December 7th and 8th. The Ice claimed both matchups, 4-3 and 5-4 respectively. However, the Hawks enter the final weekend of the regular season on a six-game winning streak. The run includes victories versus the Fargo Force and Des Moines Buccaneers, both of whom Waterloo had likewise not defeated previously in 2012/13.

Mr. Assist

Justin Kloos notched three assists Sunday in a 7-1 victory against the Des Moines Buccaneers, pushing his USHL-leading total to 57. He is three ahead of linemate Taylor Cammarata and just two shy of the league's Tier I-era record, set in 2007/08 by John Kemp of the Indiana Ice. In between, Indiana's Blake Coleman set up 58 goals in 2010/11, the only other player with more than Kloos in a single season since before 2002/03. Favorable comparisons between Kloos and Coleman bode well for the Black Hawk forward's NHL Draft status. Neither was listed in the Central Scouting midterm rankings during their respective seasons, however Coleman was chosen in the third round of the 2011 draft - 75th overall - by the New Jersey Devils.

Cal Keeps Cool on Hot Streak

Goaltender Cal Petersen was in net for five of the six wins during the Hawks' current six-game streak. Saturday's 5-2 decision against Cedar Rapids was his 20th victory of the season. That makes him the first Black Hawk since C.J. Motte in 2009/10 to win 20 or more games in one campaign. It has happened just eight times during the franchise's junior era. Petersen's recent success over the last five games has seen him record a 1.97 goals-against average while stopping 94.4% of the shots he has faced.

Sunday Special

Waterloo's weekend win versus the Des Moines Buccaneers was the sixth consecutive time the Hawks have toppled an opponent during a Sunday regular season game. The streak dates back to Sunday, February26, 2012 last season. Sundays have been particularly favorable for Taylor Cammarata, who has three goals, ten assists, and is +7 over the run. The Hawks conclude the regular season this Sunday against Indiana.

Weekly Recap

The Hawks won all four of the games they played in a six-day span last week. On the road, Waterloo downed Green Bay 7-4 Tuesday and Dubuque 4-3 in a shootout Friday. Returning to Young Arena, the Hawks slid past Cedar Rapids 5-2 on Saturday and Des Moines 7-1 Sunday.
