Washington Wild Things News Release
Washington, PA â The Washington Wild Things, presented by Washington Federal Savings Bank, are looking forward to the 2003 season by evaluating the 2002 team roster and determining who will be asked to return in 2003.
The team announced the 2003 coaching staff several weeks ago. Jeff Isom, recipient of the Roger Hanners Manager of the Year Award for 2002 will return as the team's field manager. The field staff also includes Joe Charbonneau, Kent Tekulve, and Mark Mason.
"I've always felt that baseball officially starts when the final gun of the Super Bowl sounds. So, now is the time for us to gear up for 2003," said Kent Tekulve, Director of Baseball Operations for the Wild Things.
To that end, the Wild Things have exercised their 2003 options on the following players: Matt Baber, RHP (8-7, 3.63 ERA), David Bradley, RHP(11-4, 3.55 ERA), David Cerminaro, RHP (1-0, 2.84 ERA), Mike Check, OF (.262, 1HR, 16 RBI), Jay Coakley, C (.307, 4 HR, 22 RBI), Joe Cuervo, OF (.256, 14 HR, 57 RBI), Jason Elkins, RHP ( 2-0, 1.88 ERA), Ryan Ellis, IF (.260, 1 HR, 29 RBI), Brad Hensler, IF (313, 8 HR, 54 RBI), Jared Howton 2002 Frontier League's Pitcher of the Year, LHP (11-3, 1.98 ERA), Josh Loggins, OF (.347, 5 HR, 45 RBI), Dylan Putnam, RHP (2-0, 1.04 ERA), Anthony Sclafani, RHP (1-0, 3.44 ERA), and Casey Stone, OF (.269, 0 HR, 27 RBI).
Tekulve mailed the 2003 season contract offers out last week.
"I'm really excited as I look forward to the 2003 season," said Tekulve. "Last year was spectacular, but this year, Wild Things' fans will know about half of the players on opening day! Think about that. Last year they didn't know any of the players. This year they'll know a lot of them. I think that adds a wonderful element to the atmosphere and the season."
In a related roster move, the contract rights to infielder Chad Ehrnsberger have been sold to the Kansas City T-Bones of the Northern League.
The Wild Things have also released pitchers Jason Foreman, Jason Hickman, and Kevin Kuklis, as well as catcher Anthony Taylor.
Catcher, Shawn Argento and First Baseman, Travis Copley will not return in 2003 because of the Frontier League age restriction rule (players may not be 27 years of age or older on opening day).
The Wild Things' home opener is scheduled for Wednesday, May 28th at Falconi Field when they will take on the 2002 Frontier League Champion Richmond Roosters.
