Washington Spirit Remains Atop NWSL After 0-0 Draw in Front of 4,333 Fans
May 7, 2016 - National Women's Soccer League (NWSL)
Washington Spirit News Release
BOYDS, Md - The Washington Spirit (3-0-1, 10 pts.) and Portland Thorns (2-0-2, 8 pts.) remain the only two undefeated teams in the National Women's Soccer League after battling to a 0-0 tie in front of 4,333 fans at Maureen Hendricks Field. The Spirit remains atop the NWSL standings however and will do so no matter the results in other league action around the country.
Despite the point earned, the Spirit will see the match as an opportunity lost to extend their lead in the standings, with several opportunities throughout the game grazing inches away from a winning goal. A first half apparent goal by Crystal Dunn was called back after being ruled offside on a play too close to call.
The match was action packed and aggressive from the start, with both teams trading long spells of possession and attack, several cautions, banter between players, and the eventual ejection of Portland's Tobin Heath with two minutes to go in regulation.
The Spirit took advantage of Heath's absence immediately, with the remainder of regulation and a full five minutes of stoppage time played almost entirely in the Thorns' end.
In that time the home team put a 15-yard shot directly at the goalkeeper Adrianna Franch, hit the post, and fired over from close range.
Box Score, Video Highlights and full story will be posted on WashingtonSpirit.com later tonight.
The Spirit remains at home next weekend, taking on the Houston Dash Saturday, May 14, 2016. Tickets are available now by calling 301-337-8579 or visiting the Washington Spirit website.
